Meh

I was looking for a book on color theory and mixing colors so I thought I would give this book a try. Ms. Edwards needs to get a little more up to date on her neurological information as there is no evidence of people being more in the "right-brain or "left brain". Both sides of the brain are in action when we are being creative, otherwise we would likely be having a stroke! She has also created a new color system that is somewhat gimmicky. It would make it extremely hard for a newer student to apply this and then try to learn the tried and true concepts of the older Master's at the same time. I bought a book from a less egocentric author by buying Gurney's 'Color and Light' and learned more from it than any other book on color I have bought to date.

Delightful. A must-have for anyone who enjoys any visual arts

Anyone with any interest in visual arts will get something out of this book. I do makeup as a hobby on the side, and I have learned some awesome things from this book. Color theory benefits anyone who paints, draws, does makeup, makes films, etc. It changes how you look at things once you understand how colors really work. There is actually a science to it and it is delightful.

A Must for All Artists

At last a book on Colour that explains clearly, with exercises for practice, the various aspects of colour use. Finding the values of colour on a black & white grid I have always found impossible. Now it's clearer.

Betty Edwards writes clearly, obviously loves her subject and is accustomed to imparting information to students at all levels.
Furthermore, the font size in this book is great and easy to read, particularly for mature aged artists.
I would recommend this book as a must for all artists from beginners to those more experienced who have, like me, struggle to master the nuances of getting the correct value in colour.

This is the 109th review I've created. Up to this point, I've made a lot of strong recommendations on books I think you'd love but I've never said you *must* read a particular book.

I'm gonna break that streak here.

If you're a creative person, you need to read this book. It's that good. And, when I say "creative person" I mean anyone who's committed to creating an authentically awesome life. (And, given the fact that you're reading this, my hunch is that clearly means YOU!)

I'm not sure how many times I've read The War of Art over the years but it's a lot. Each time I pick it up I get a swift kick in the creative butt and my life takes a significant step forward.

As the author of The Legend of Bagger Vance and a number of great best-selling novels (my favorite beyond Bagger Vance is Gates of Fire--an incredible portrayal of the classic Spartan warriors), Steven Pressfield knows what it's like to create. He has an extraordinary way of capturing the challenges we face in the War of Art--along with the means by which we can overcome those obstacles (or, as he calls it "Resistance"). Powerful stuff.

this book will help you if you have an open mind

This book may not be for everyone, because not everyone will recieve the message, but it is intended for everyone, in that creativity lies in every human in some form. A lot of reviewers complain about the short chapters, the seeming lack of content, the casual flippancy Pressfield occasionally invokes when discussing the image of Hitler as a repressed, blocked artist, the third part of the book that deals with higher dimensions and serving a higher purpose. etc. No, this book may not be for everynyone. But if you are a blocked creative with an open heart and an eager mind or someone seeking to launch any kind of humanistic endeavor or starting a business, etc, you should consider giving it a try.

This is an unorthodox book. You'll finish it in a day or two. It's filled with words like "Resistance" that sound like self-help buzzwords. It isn't. It's a very apt and all-encompassing term for the forces that keep you from doing your life's work, whatever that may be. Distraction, apathy, booze, procrastination, excuses, toxic relationships, depression, and my favorite of Pressfield's: "compulsive screwing up", just to name a few. Anyone honest with himself who has ever claimed to have "writer's block" knows it's a cop-out, an excuse for not sitting down at an empty screen/page, and doing the work.

This book will kick you in the ass and show you how you've been self-sabotaging yourself. It will also fire you up and give you the strength you need to press on and do the work. Pressfield is a kindly drill-sergeant; he holds no punches but you get the feeling that he really wants you to succeed.

As I read the opening chapter on resistance I saw my guilty self on each page. Illusions were shattered. but it inspired me to sit down at the blank screen and do it. You'll read it once and then refer to it again and again as you might work with a coach on your golf swing.

It's a blue-print, not a map, and everyone's experience will be slightly different as they work through their own demons creating their blocks, so don't expect this to solve your problems. It's up to you to kill your own Minotaur. YOU have to do the work. Identifying the things in life that hold you back, the negative thought patterns, perfectionism, etc., is only the beginning.

The third part of the book, the part that addresses that thorny issue of where ideas and inspiration comes from, will be where many will fall by the wayside. Pressfield cautions you not to hold on too tightly to that precious gemstone you call your "talent", and open yourself to other possibilites, that there may be a higher dimensional energy at work here and that we, the artists, writers, dancers, whatever, are only the agents that this energy works through. Call it what you want. god, the universe, the tao, whatever. I think it was jazz great Charlie Parker that said when asked where his ideas come from, "I just try to get out of the way". He meant that he suspended all ego and allowed the work to flow through him from a higher plane. not comfortable with all this higher-dimensional nonsense? Maybe it's not for you.

But The War of Art will help you. It's helping me. Try his other one, Do The Work as well; some of it is redundant, but is still very worth it. you have nothing to lose, only your blocks, so open your mind and try it.

Had Tears In My Eyes By The Time I Was Finished

This is an absolutely amazing book on self-discipline and creativity.

If you're an entrepreneur, an artist, a writer, scientist or just about anybody with an internal urge to CREATE something but cannot because of distractions, fears, doubts and apprehensions, then this is the book for you.

This will book show and define the #1 thing that's stopping you from bringing out your creative potential. It's called Resistance and how it behaves and how it beats you.

And then it stresses why we should overcome the resistance and how to overcome it successfully by detaching ourselves from the fruits, operating from a territorial perspective (i.e. Doing work for the sake of doing work).

By the time I reached the small chapter on Gita and Krishna's explanation on doing work for work's sake, I literally had tears in my eyes.

... Because that's the way an artist must operate, not caring for the fruits.

And I can attest my success in my business & job for JUST that. I gave up all hopes, desires & doubts I had.

I didn't care. I just decided to do the work, punched in my time and 3 years later, I'm at a level that's shocking for many (but something I dreamed about).

However, I still have a lot of blocks where I didn't express myself and get the creative part of me and I'm fortunate to have come across this book.

Anyone who is here to CREATE something - read it. It will change your life!

A fresh new voice from Key West!

Breaking through the many excellent books coming out of Key West these days comes a terrific fast-paced story unique to this small but prominent jewel in the Florida Keys. In Diana Reif's debut novel, she introduces a feisty, tough heroine with a lot of island smarts. Successfully navigating through the corruption of the bubba and legal systems, young lawyer Tab DeWitt finds a way to outwit the bad guys and come out on top. And the bad guys are all there--a corrupt judge, greedy builders, and assorted crooks. At the center of it all is the emerald loot from a sunken Spanish galleon. A great read to take to the beach. I look forward to more stories from this talented author.

A great Key West tale of sunken treasure

Here’s a mystery that has it all: a savvy heroine, a terrific plot, plenty of Key West atmosphere, and an assortment of unsavory characters who all want a piece of the action from infamous emeralds retrieved from a Spanish galleon. The ship and all hands came to a bad end during a hurricane in the 17th century, but the avarice that drives the plot is alive and well. Excellent translation!

A much better translation than that of Rossi (aka Japrisot). The Saumont translation is much more informal. Saumont uses the pass� compos� instead of the pass� simple, which, of course, places the narrative in a much more conversational register. Saumont also makes masterful syntactic and lexical choices to render in French the slangy, teenage male register of the narrator.

Of course, I'm making these comments from the point of view of a native speaker of American English who was 14 when _The Catcher in the Rye_ was published, so I am much more familiar with how the English "sounds" to an American ear than how the French translation "sounds" to a French ear. The English sounds very natural, very much the way a rebellious teenage boy of that era would speak. I can only guess how natural the French translation sounds, except that my French is good enough, I think, to recognize that the Saumont translation is more faithful than Rossi's to the conversational, slangy register of the original English.

I would be very interested in hearing the opinion of a native French speaker.

Haines brings together not only stories set in the Delta region of the South but also stories that draw on the rich traditions of the Delta blues. Naturally, the iconic saga of Robert Johnson selling his soul at the Crossroads turns up (in Charlaine Harris’ “Crossroads Bargain”), but even without the supernatural, these tales are rich in gothic overtones and in themes common to the blues: love lost, found, and betrayed; the inevitability of heartbreak; and, of course, the sense that evil is lurking right outside the juke joint. Haines gathers an impressive group of authors, including James Lee Burke, John Grisham, and Ace Atkins, all of whom deliver solid stories, especially Burke, whose “Big Midnight Special” is one of several entries set in a prison. Perhaps the standout story, though, comes from editor Haines, who typically writes southern cozies but proves more than capable of working dark in “The Sugar Cure,” about a prison guard’s wife who isn’t going to take it anymore. --Bill Ott

James Lee Burke, John Grisham, Les Standiford, Beth Ann Fennelly, and more--a total of twenty of the best Southern writers--link music, crime, passion, the Blues and the Mississippi Delta in this remarkable new collection of short stories.

Whether playing out in modern-day Tunica's gambling casinos or traveling back in time to forge an unexpected connection to the assassination of President Kennedy, each story has been carefully chosen by the editor, Carolyn Haines, herself one of the contributors.

In Suzanne Hudson's "All the Way to Memphis," two unlikely characters set out on a road trip, stopping at Buck's Diner, a place where time has stopped. A lone waitress saunters to the table offering more tea, calling them honey and sugar and baby, her "blood red fingernails clicking against heavy glass."

The characters in Lynne Barrett's "Blues for Veneece" uncover, quite literally, a crime scene one family had hoped was buried forever. In another story, the wife of a captain of the Parchman State Penitentiary dreams of any life but the one she has.

In fact, most of the characters in these stories seem to dream of elsewhere, singing their own Blues tunes to the beat of an ordinary life.

Often played out against a backdrop of murder and misappropriation, the stories tell of second chances and new beginnings, lives wasted and more than a few rescued. Moonlit nights, shape shifting, concealed and un-concealed weapons make appearances, leaving readers with chills running up spines or hearts beating faster.

As if reading this collection for the pure enjoyment of the writing isn't enough, a portion of the sales will be donated to literacy efforts in the Delta. Well done, on many counts.

As a southern, blues lover, nothing could be better than the insightful compilation Delta Blues offers. I have enjoyed Carolyn Haines work for many years, but this is very special. I have already given one copy as a gift. Don't miss it if you love music and life with soul deep roots.

Outstanding Delta Noir

I love Amazon, but buy from bricks and mortar too (you really want one around for times when you can't wait for shipping) and picked this collection up a few months ago. It took me a while to get around to opening it, but now I can't put it down. As a noir/mystery/crime/music fan, I'm finding Delta Blues very, very enjoyable - if you love one or more of these categories, pick it up yourself. Now I need to go listen to some blues and eat something with pepper vinegar on it.
