I think I'm a little bitter because the book was so very promising up until the point that it just wasn't any more
By Steve!
Free the Darkness couldn't make up its mind whether it wanted to be a fish-out-of-water story, or a power fantasy where the main character is an unparalleled paragon at...well, everything. The unfortunate truth is that it tries too hard to do both, and suffers as a result. The main character, Rezkin, is a peerless warrior. He is the most well trained warrior, healer, and rouge in existence. He slides through magical wards like a slow knife thrust, and every single woman (and not a few men) that he comes across want to bed him.

Normally, I would automatically stop reading a book with a main character like this after about ten pages or so. However, Free the Darkness was utterly unique in that Rezkin was initially portrayed as a sociopathic killer with absolutely no understanding of interpersonal relationships. This led to utterly wonderful and hilarious situations. It was well developed, well thought out - a real comedy of errors, where Rezkin would say something, generally related to something horrific he had just done on the other side of town, and other people would take it entirely incorrectly. It was fantastic, and it added a real element of vulnerability to Rezkin. It was SO fun to read, that I devoured the first half of the book in one sitting - I was up until 3 am reading, and I had a 9:30 am exam the next day. I enjoyed it that much.

Unfortunately, right after I put it down, the story just sort of loses its charm. I want to keep this review as spoiler free as possible, so I don't want to mention any specifics, but it quickly becomes unbelievable that Rezkin would be as obtuse as he is with the other main characters, while being able to navigate other social situations so masterfully. He also goes on and on about holding to a set of Rules, while violating as many of them as possible. For example, for a guy who should remain in the shadows whenever possible, he sure does love getting up in people's faces at the drop of a hat. Furthermore, as more characters are introduced, it becomes apparent that not only is Rezkin the very best, really everyone else is kind of incompetent. There is never ANY situation where Rezkin is not TOTALLY in control of what is going on, and he punks EVERYONE. There is no threat to him, never even the slightest glimmer of a challenge. Almost no one ever even thinks to stand up to him in any way. And, while in the first half of the book, he was humanized by the offsetting basic social misunderstandings, this just sort of...goes away.

I should also probably mention that the dialogue comes across as cumbersome in places, and many of the characters have the same "voice." This problem isn't as pronounced in Free the Darkness as I have seen elsewhere, however. There are also some confusing perspective shifts that happen, where there isn't any typesetting or anything to indicate that there has been a POV shift. Again, minor and infrequent.

Is it worth a read? At the price point, it might be worth it to pick up just to read the first half. There really are some very cool, amusing things that happen. Just be aware that about halfway through the charm wears thin. In the spirit of full disclosure, I've only made it three-quarters of the way through, and I'm not sure that I'll be able to finish. Honestly, I think I'm a little bitter because the book was so very promising up until the point that it just wasn't any more.

Good start, then just goes off the tracks

The beginning was very interesting. Then the interaction between the Rez and his "friends" becomes ridiculous. I just couldn't buy into the back and forth. The story comes off as if the protagonist in nearly omnipotent, which was actually the bright spot, but everyone else is a pack of socially stunted idiots. Which is interesting given that Rez should be the one struggling socially. Not a terrible read, but just not for me.

Great beginning to a brand new fantasy series.
By Donnie
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the story & writting since I had not had the pleasure of reading any of the Kel Kade's other books before this. The story moves along nicely, please of well thought out action through out the book. I would have prefer the main protagonist Rezkin to be a little older, say around 25 - 28yrs old because of all the things he had to learn & do. Even though he may be a child prodigy it is still very impressive to have mastered all those skills at such a young age. In any case this is the author's call.

I also love there is realistic passing of time in the book to move the story. I felt a little disconnected when Rezkin decided to reinvent the criminal work with such ease even though the odds are stack with him. However, I think this may just be the author's way moving along this side story arc.

Overall I love this book & new series. Already looking forward to book 2 since I bought it immediately after I finished book 1.
