About the Author

Jonathan Barnett is a professor and director of the Urban Design Program at the University of Pennsylvania, a former director of urban design for the New York City Planning Department, and an advisor on many projects in the United States, China, Korea, Cambodia, and Mexico. He has written extensively about city design theory and practice. Educated at Yale and the University of Cambridge, he is a Fellow of both the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of Certified Planners.

Love this book.

This book is so interesting. A scope of various City Designs captivated me. When I was reading this book, I realized that it not only talks about Landscape Architecture, but also a little about everything related to the field; Architecture, Planning, Development, Engineering, etc.

As to the quality, even though it's not hard cover, it's held up really good to my constant use.

About the Author
Robert Wade is Professor of Political Economy at the London School of Economics. He has a long-standing interest in the causes of economic growth and economic inequality on a world scale and has conducted field research in Pitcairn Island, Italy, India, South Korea, Taiwan, and the World Bank. He worked earlier as an economist in the World Bank and in the Office of Technology Assessment (U. S. Congress).

Brilliant Study in Heterodox Economic Growth Theory

Robert Wade's 'Governing the Market' is a landmark text in development economics. Southeast Asian Tigers are often used to describe the success inherent through trade and market liberalization. What Wade discovers is that this finding is only skin deep. The economic policies of all the Tigers were far from 'free' and often manipulated the market to focus on total production rather than marginal efficiency.

Wade focuses on Taiwan (with comparisons to Japan and South Korea). Taiwan developed a dualistic economy where most of the businesses (~70%) were small firms that operated on a relatively free market. However, the rest of the economy (which accounts for most of the countries production) were highly regulated and controlled by government intervention. Taiwan's government led the market by coercing private firms into investing in new industries that were deemed economically viable. When a private firm would not step in the government went ahead and formed their own public enterprises (which account for a large part of Taiwan's economy). Through highly selective use of import-substitution and export-promotion strategies the economy flourished with unprecedented growth.

The other Tigers followed a similar path as Taiwan, South Korea, and Japan but without selective development policy. This is predominantly why they had lower growth rates. Even Hong Kong, the neoliberal bastion of success, turns out to be a highly regulated economy (p331-333 is essential reading).

Wade comes to a disturbing conclusion: Benevolent authoritarian rule may be necessary for developing nations to thrive. Without authoritarian corporatism it may be very difficult for growth to occur.

The 2003 version is highly preferred to the original because of a new, comprehensive, introduction. The introduction gives a response to critics of 'Governing the Market' and a thorough explanation of the Asian Financial Crisis. The introduction alone is worth the price of most texts.

I highly recommend this to anyone interested in economic growth theory.

Classic on the taiwanese developmental state

"Governing the Market" is almost certainly the seminal work on Taiwan's economic development. The work gives a detailed account of the ways in which state intervention actively promoted economic growth, contrary to the protestations of the IMF-led "Washington Consensus". Rather than focusing on polemical argument, as is so often the case in political economy, Wade's study is extremely detailed and persuasive, explaining both the economics, but also the politics of corruption (and how even corruption can be harnessed into economic productivity).

Personally, I think Wade may have underestimated the importance of widespread education, effective infrastructure, and significant quantities of US aid compared with other parts of the developing world as "lubricants" to jump-starting the economy. Nevertheless, his argument that the state-imposed redistribution of agricultural land went a long ways to generating the necessary surplus for development is solid. Wade also recognizes that this surplus was then harnessed by a government savings-and-loan structure that facilitated capital investment in domestic heavy industry (the "commanding heights" of the economy) - often a difficult task to accomplish. As Wade convincingly contends, there was a significant amount of East Asian-style Fabian socialism involved in Taiwan's development - and the Taiwanese were remarkably successful because of it - despite some of the roadbumps encountered by others who tried to replicate the model (the quasi-successful states of SE Asia: Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia).

The first 150 pages of this volume and the conclusion, at minimum, are a must-read for any serious student of developmental economics or political economy. This edition is especially useful because the introduction convincingly addresses claims that rent-seeking led to the 1997-8 crisis with substantial evidence (supported by even conservative economists like Jagdish Bhagwati at Columbia) that excessive portfolio liberalization in the real estate sector was the leading cause of the 1997-8 crash - and even accounting for this, Taiwan and South Korea each recovered remarkably well in a short period of time, and have now joined the ranks of the first world.

About the Author
Michael G. LaFosse has been an origami artist for decades, and is internationally regarded as a leading authority and master of the art. The author of many books, kits and videos relating to paperfolding and hand papermaking, LaFosse produces fine paper art and commercial designs for a variety of international clients. His work has been shown in museums and galleries around the world, and is currently on display at the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts.

Richard L. Alexander co-founded the Origamido Studio, a teaching center, gallery and design studio in Massachusetts, with Michael G. LaFosse in 1996.

Some repetition of Advanced Origami, but a beautiful book nonetheless

I give this book 4 stars with reservations. Many of the patterns are VERY similar to those in Advanced Origami. However, between the two books, I'd advocate buying this one, so, hence the four stars.

LaFosse's books are unique in that they focus on paper and on wet folding. He empahsizes the art of folding, not intricate folds. His patterns tend to have a fairly low number of steps, but in order to generate the desired final product, a lot of time will be spent finishing.

The repetition starts in the "Techniques" section at the front of the book when he talks about making paper. Identical photographs are used in multiple cases between this book and Advanced Origami.

Entirely new patterns not similar to those found in Advanced Origami include a lobster, a fairly weak monk seal design, a great manatee fold, a cormorant, a great penguin, a modular flower requiring several sheets of paper for an un-extraordinary result, a fairly mundane fighter jet, and an amazing alligator. It's basically worth buying the book just for the alligator. Folds that gave me deja vu included the grackle, whale, butterfly, turtle, and orchid. (Sound familiar?)

Anyway, it certainly seems worth having one of LaFosse's books in your library if you're an origami enthusiast. If I had to choose, I'd pick this one. If the first one totally rocked your world, then you'll want to pick this one as well.

These books are for an intermediate or better folder, in my opinion. Complete beginners will probably find them a bit frustrating.

We purchased this for our grandson who learned some basic origami in school art class and on the internet. The book is large and arrived in beautiful condition. It had an abundance of items and patterns which even basic users could use as well as more advanced patterns. An overall good buy!

It isn’t a large book, but the documentary style works well and I found it in fact contained good practical advice including inspiration to get out there and make a difference, getting started, focusing on the idea first and details later and many other great pearls of wisdom.

Chapter 5
Natural Healing of Mycoplasma
In Depth

The first and most important thing to understand about the mycoplasmas are that they are very old. The ancestral mycoplasmas split off from the streptococcus branch of bacteria some 600 million years ago. The phytoplasmas that infect plants began to specialize some 500 million years ago, diversifying considerably at the emergence of flowering plants 140 million years ago. The mycoplasmas that cause human disease, that in fact specialize in the infection of mammals, began to develop along with the emergence of mammals themselves some 220 million years ago. Primates emerged around 100 million years ago, apes 28 million years ago. The earliest human ancestors showed up about 8 million years ago, neanderthals 2 million years ago, and modern humans 200,000 years ago. In all that time, the mycoplasmas have been specializing in infecting host species very similar to us. And they have gotten very good at it.

In contrast, pharmaceutical antibiotics were discovered in 1928 and only commercially produced in 1942. The first mycoplasma was only isolated in a lab by humans in 1937. By the 1990s researchers learned enough about them to grow (some of) them in labs. Only in the few decades since have the organisms begun to be studied in any depth. We’ve got maybe eighty years of experience with the mycoplasmas, science-wise; they have millions of years of experience with life-forms very similar to us. So, the first and most important thing to understand about the mycoplasmas is that they are very old, very experienced, very adaptable. We are babies in comparison; and, if you have looked at just how adaptable the mycoplasmas are, not very smart babies at that.

In order to successfully treat organisms as complex and as highly intelligent as the mycoplasmas, it is important to first get rid of all sense you may have of superiority to “stupid” bacteria due to our “superior” intelligence. Second, it is crucial to understand what they do and why they do it--and to begin to intervene in that process in a sophisticated way, that is, for us to adapt our own behaviors to theirs. In other words, to be like Ginger Rogers in relation to Fred Astaire--doing everything he did but in high heels and backward. And, with respect for their capacities, to begin to intervene in what they do at the subtlest levels possible.

In this process, it is also crucially important to support our most intelligent ally--the human body. Health, irrespective of what medical science does, cannot be restored if the human body does not also participate. For, like the mycoplasmas, the human body has come out of a long history of complex development on this planet and it has its own long-developed mechanisms for dealing with infections. Thus, supporting immune function as well as organ health is important.

If you know the type of Mycoplasma infection involved (that is, the particular species) and if you have a comprehensive symptom list it is much easier to design a protocol for a mycoplasmal infection. However, it is possible to develop a general protocol that can be applied to all Mycoplasma species. One caveat: this is a general protocol. The best protocols will be designed for the individual person and the specific species of Mycoplasma, and will be adjusted as needed during treatment.

SEVEN THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

There are seven things to keep in mind when designing a mycoplasma treatment protocol.

1. Replace the nutrients that are scavenged by the mycoplasmas. This must be done to avoid nutrient depletion in the body and the problems it can cause. NOTE: This will NOT “feed” the mycoplasmas. They are doing just fine feeding themselves--from your body’s own tissues. Supplementation keeps your body from experiencing nutrient depletion as they do so. Crucially: all research has found that replacing scavenged nutrients is essential to restore normal cellular and organism functioning. I repeat . . . all research has found . . . (that’s good, repeat it as often as you can).

2. Reduce the cytokine cascade that the bacteria initiate. This will go a long way toward relieving the symptoms that mycoplasma infection causes and, important because the mycoplasmas use the cytokine cascade to break down tissues to acquire nutrients, this will begin to starve them, reducing their numbers.

3. Support and protect the organs and systems that the mycoplasmas affect. This will relieve many mycoplasmal symptoms; it will also reduce the organism’s nutrient intake since they gain many nutrients by breaking down parts of various organs and systems. Some of the most important are: red blood cells; endothelial tissues; mucous membrane systems; the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves; collagen, cartilage, and synovial tissues; spleen and lymph system; and immune system. Also, in essence, mycoplasmas are first and foremost bacteria that infect the ciliary structures of the body. The more you protect such structures, the better your protocol will work.

4. Use specific mycoplasmal antibacterials to kill the mycoplasma organisms or at least severely restrict their numbers. Herbs, supplements, and antibiotics are all useful and highly synergetic for this. NOTE: Unless, specifically noted otherwise, antibiotics can be used along with ALL the herbs and supplements in this book.

5. Enhance immune function. The stronger the immune system, the less severe the course of the disease.

6. Address specific symptoms not addressed otherwise. This will reduce the symptom picture and increase the quality of life.

7. The most elegant interventions will act in three or more of these categories. That is, if you find an herb that a) replaces nutrients, b) reduces cytokine cascade, c) protects specific organ systems, and d) enhances immune function or is antibacterial or addresses specific symptoms (or every one of those things)--that is what an elegant intervention looks like. It is a way of identifying the most specific herb or supplement for treating a mycoplasma infection. Two of the best herbal examples of this are cordyceps and houttuynia.

Buy this book if you have LYME and all the co-infections

This guys knowledge is incredible and life saving. After going to several doctors with my partner for Lyme and getting little to none support we have now put our health into the hands of this book and his other one.
The detailed protocol tells you exactly what herbs to buy and where, and so much more.

While she is still seeing a doctor, we are only relying on him for the allopathic aspect. This book will detail absolutely everything you need to know about lyme. I also recommend his website as well. If only someone had told us about this guy 3 years ago.

I pray the anyone who has lyme will benefit from this review. Just an FYI this book was designed that you can take all the herbs in tandem with antibiotics. Wishing you the best of luck to regain your health quickly.

Best Bartonella and Mycoplasma Book I Have Found

Healing Lyme Disease Coinfections, by Stephen Harrod Buhner, is easily the best discussion of Mycoplasma and Bartonella infections and their testing and herbal treatment.

This book is a great bargain,since purchasing a copy of even one of the published studies he discusses would cost more than the entire price of the book. Buhner has obviously read and distilled over a hundred scientific journal articles to write this book. It is obvious he has read the entire articles, not just the abstracts.

The depth of the book and the power of the various herbals to precisely modify the immune system is almost overwhelming. For example, Scutellaria baicalensis, Chinese skullcap, reduces nitric oxide, iNOS, IL-3, IL-6, IL-17, COX -2, PGE2, NF-xB,IxB-a, IL-1b, IL-2 IL-12, TNF-a and VEGF and tends to upregulate IL-10. Amazingly, some physicians claim there are no published studies of herbal medicinal effects! Interestingly, Buhner reports Scutellaria inhibits Cytochrome P450 C3A4, while a journal article, Eur J Drug Metab Pharmacokinet. 2011 Dec;36(4):249-56, concluded it did not inhibit C3A4, in vitro.

I have personally witnessed resveratrol, andrographis, cat's claw, smilax, Isatis and hawthorne herbals Buhner recommended for Lyme Disease, produce favorable results. I have also observed a Western Blot Ig M 41 positive Lyme patient, recover from Herxheimer dieoff faster, using Isatis herbal, recommended by this book. I suspect the Lyme dieoff cleared faster, because Isatis decreases LPS endotoxins.

In addition to treating or reducing severity of Mycoplasma and Bartonella, many herbals discussed in the book are also effective against allergies, encephalitis, arthritis, and other bacterial and viral infections, including Staphylococcus, Shigella, Enterococcus, Psuedomonas, Klebsiella, Malaria, Hepatitis C, HIV, Herpes, Cytomegalovirus, etc.

Buhner reports he has recovered from Lyme disease and has been using herbals to treat people, for about 25 years. With antibiotic resistance, from prescription medications increasing, herbals provide effective treatment alternatives, for many bacterial and viral diseases. Herbals such as Astragalus and cat's claw can also be used proactively, as tonics, to prevent infections, such as Lyme Disease.

Handbook of Pediatric Mock Codes

A very helpful book for running mock codes for House Officers. It helped me feel more comfortable running mock codes (andthe real ones when they happened) because you continually practice a method for conducting the codes. I attribute three lives saved b/c this book prepared me to handle several code situations instead of having a brain fart. Scenarios are realistic. Helpful introduction reviews the roles of each participant and exhorts the leader to know each participants roles to better run the codes. Good comments on teaching points for each specific scenario. The scenarios have enough flexibility built into them to make each a mega code or to just to keep it simple and focus on the ABC's. Only drawback is that some treatment options emphasize style points but are presented as standard of care...not enough to detract from the overall helpfulness of the book.

Comprehensive, but slightly dated content

Very comprehensive collection of scenarios, with rationale for treatment decisions. Slightly outdated, doesn't contain Pediatric Advance Life Support (PALS 2000) updates, but don't let that detract from the value of this reference. If you know what the differences are (and those of us who run mock codes should), you can easily modify the cases to reflect the newest guidelines.

The biggest downside is the lack of availability of this book!

About the Author
John Ridley is the Malcolm McCallum Chair of Economic Geology at Colorado State University where he has taught ore deposit geology and field geology for the past seven years. His earlier academic positions spanned three other continents, with positions at universities in Australia, Switzerland and Zimbabwe, and over his career he has taught courses in geochemistry, petrology and structural geology. Professor Ridley has published over seventy articles in refereed journals and books, in addition to geological maps and reports for companies and groups within the mining and minerals industries.

Very well executed

A clear and concise up-to-date explanation of ore types and geochemical formation processes. The author carefully organizes and summarizes information without delving too far into poorly-supported alternatives, yet does not fail to mention secondary factors that may play a role. The result is a text full of relevant, organized information, and very little of the tedium that crops up somewhere in most texts. Professor Ridley also eschews informative geochemical diagrams like those showing stability of iron and manganese sulfides, oxides, and carbonates, which might be considered a fault; but these diagrams require a lot of expert interpretation and a grasp of relevance to actual contexts so the author provides the interpretation instead. Even the descriptions and maps of actual deposits around the world appear to have been carefully filtered to best exemplify the processes (rather than simply using the most thoroughly studied locations).

Outstanding text on Ore Formations.

This is a very comprehensive book on ore formations. The sections on hydrothermal processes is exceptional and exhaustive. While well written, to fully gain the knowledge contained, it has to read several times. There is a lot of information presented which takes a bit of effort to absorb. This is a must read for anyone trying to understand the genesis and morphology of economic minerals.
