In doubt? Get it!

I just received Critter Costuming, and I must say that I LOVE it. It is a must have for anyone who is interested in making any type of mascot style costume. It covers everything from design and planning to tools and materials you would need, head and body construction to traveling and performing. It also has a helpful list places to order materials that are mentioned in the book. Even interviews with professional cosume makers, performers, and material specialists are included.

It has advice on almost every question you could think of asking about making this style costumes and some things you wouldn't think about until you were stuck (such as how to sew in a zipper correctly).

I must admit that I was hesitant to order the book at first because, one, I thought it cost a little more than I was willing to spend, and two, because it was spiral bound... but let me just say that the price is definitely worth it, and the spiral does not make it any lower quality.. and in fact, it's much easier to lay flat and reference when you are working than a hard- or paperback book.

It doesn't matter if you are just starting your first suit, you have already made a few but would still like a good reference guide, or you have never made one before but are interested, I would definitely recommend getting this book. It is one of the best investments I've made this year.

Sketches from Japan is the charming record of an eminent architect's visit to Tokyo and Kyoto. Each day Francis Ching would walk downtown, past temples and through residential districts, recording his visual impressions with a fine pen. He delights in the juxtapositions of old and new, hard-edged and organic, plain and richly textured, that are nowhere more striking than in a modern Japanese city. His freehand line drawings capture the essence of springtime Japan--more successfully than photographs, perhaps, through the isolation of elements and elimination of details inherent in the sketching process. The dark wood of an ancient gateway is emphasized by drawing the surrounding trees only in profile; the shaggy outline of a thatch roof suggests its straw surface as clearly as a completed study. The artist places each drawing in context with a few articulate sentences; he includes some gentle lessons on drawing and geometry, but the text is not didactic. The intimacy of many of the scenes--small interiors, architectural details, people strolling down narrow streets--is enhanced by the informality of the pen-and-ink medium. The monochromatic line treatment is in keeping with traditional Japanese sumi-ink drawings. The book also continues a tradition set by 18th-century haiku poets and artists such as Buson and Taiga, who recorded their journeys in combinations of diary and sketchbook. Sketches from Japan is a small-scale gem, and we can learn as much from it as from many more elaborate photographic studies and coffee-table books. --John Stevenson

Cultural and Aesthetic Delight

There is a long tradition among artists and writers of maintaining a journal to record observations and impressions. Many writers use journals to write informally, often spontaneously, to describe real or imagined people, places, and events. Artists and naturalists as well fill sketchbooks with both words and images to help focus their observations. Frank Ching, the author of this sketchbook, not only records the optical reality of what is seen; he uses these drawings as a means of gaining understanding, insight, and perhaps even inspiration. His drawings stimulate the mind to think and can even make visible aspects that cannot be seen by the naked eye, or captured on film by a camera.
Frank Ching made most of the drawings in this sketchbook in or around O-okayama, a town southwest of downtown Tokyo, where the Tokyo Institute of Technology is located. The subject matter ranges from street scenes to traditional construction details, from temples and their sacred precincts to stimulating juxtapositions of old and new. He has successfully captured the sights, sounds and even smells of vibrant metropolis Tokyo, enabling the reader to feel the humid heat of the day or the cool rainy mist that fell as he drew. In addition, there are scenes sketched during the author's brief excursion to Kyoto and the mountain village of Takayama
All the drawings were executed in a pure contour-line technique with a fountain pen and black ink. There is a crispness and finality to an inkline that is both daunting and exciting. The process not only fostered the careful observation of details; it also required seeing how they fit into the larger framework and pattern of shapes, and noting which details could be omitted. The shape and extent of the white spaces are as important to a composition as what is delineated.
Francis D.K. Ching (1943- ) completed a month in the spring of 1990 as a visiting scholar at the Tokyo Institute of Technology which he spent producing this sketchbook.

beautiful and INSPIRING collection of drawings

Every fan of drawing, everyone who has ever traveled with a sketchbook will enjoy this little collection of his travel sketches from Japan, and this will delight those already acquainted with the ravishing beauty of Francis Ching's architectural drawings. Ching's other books are analytical drawings, showing architectural detail and forms with a controlled, disciplined line that architects know as the Ching style - contour drawings with a hierarchy of line emphasizing the outlines of figures. Ching's freehand sketches are a remarkably free riff on the drawing approach seen in his other work, as if he finally took his tie off and improvised a solo.

These are predominantly contour drawings. Tone is used for contrast of focus, or emphasis of a figure to its ground, but tone is rarely used to define a volume. The control of line is extraordinary, and the variety of marks interesting. But the power of the drawings often comes from his orchestration of many contrasting textures, shapes, and details.

Ching has remarkable control of representing a detail and describing its place as a part of a whole: there is always clarity in the disorder, even showing the exuberant chaos of telephone and power lines criss scrossing over the busy street. One can almost feel the mist, smell the sounds and hear the bustling noise on the street. The crowds of people are convincing, and he has no fear of quickly sketching a whole cluster of motorcycles. Looking at Ching's drawings feels like taking lessons in vitality, in visual selection, and in how a talented draughtsman really requires an editing, selective eye.

The drawings are unfortunately interrupted by a graphic drawing analysis of the Centennial Hall of the Tokyo Institute of Technology. There's nothing particularly wrong with the analysis but it is nowhere near as compelling as the drawings, and also this sort of formal drawing analysis is covered well in Ching's other works. This analysis breaks the tone of the rest of the books, and it's a relief when the analysis ends and the exploration of Japan's urban life begins again.

Wonderful sketches!

Sketches from Japan by Frank Ching is a wonderful book of the time he spent in Japan teaching and walking and sketching. The sketches transport you and you experience the many by-ways that he walked and examined. Ching has an incredible talent and you gain from sensing his observations. I highly recommend the book to drawers, travelers, and those who appreciate fine art.

About the Author
Karen M. Sowers is Dean of the College of Social Work at the University of Tennessee. Her expertise and research interests include juvenile justice, sexuality, social work education, child welfare, best practices in mental health, evidence-based practices, and international social work. Dr. Sowers is the author or co-author of numerous books, book chapters and journal articles. In addition to this text, Dr. Sowers has co-authored another Brooks/Cole text, Juvenile Justice Practice.

William S. Rowe is the Director of the School of Social Work at the University of South Florida. His research interests include HIV/AIDS, harm reduction, child welfare, and international social work. Dr. Rowe has written numerous journal articles and books.

Good Introduction Book

I use this book in the classroom with undergraduate students for an introduction to social welfare class. Beginning with the profession of social work, the authors then explore major concepts like poverty as well as vulnerable populations to include elders, children, women, people with disabilities, etc. Simple to read, but complete with concepts, this book provides both an ethical and human rights framework to the discourse with important examples. Organizations dedicated to specific social problems and vulnerable people are also presented to further underscore the ways in which problems are being addressed. In sum, this is a good introduction book with a global perspective on well-being and some of the pressing problems of concern to social workers today.

Not just a textbook

Arrived quickly and in good condition. The book had no signs of damage, looks as if it hasn't been used more than a few times, if that. Actually a surprisingly interesting book for a textbook. I ordered it for a class but I recommend it to anyone in the field who just wants to learn a little bit more about this aspect of social work. Has a great variety of examples, doesn't focus too much on any one issue. Maybe it's because its my field of study, but its definitely the best textbook I have, I actually have been reading the chapters that aren't assigned to me as well.

Backwards and forwards in time, the Andreasson Investigation deepens

Ray Fowler's second book in the series analyzing the long and complex case of Betty Andreasson-Luca and her family was originally published in 1982, the same year as Budd Hopkins' "Missing Time" but five years before Hopkins' landmark book "Intruders" with which it shares some common themes and methodology.

In many ways this second book about the Andreasson case is more interesting than the first published in 1979, with its focus on one single extended abduction event from 1967. Here in AA2 Fowler and the MUFON team, including psychologist/hypnotherapist Fred Max, explore the lifelong abduction experiences of both Betty and her second husband Bob and open out the discussion to what this phenomenon might be. Betty's determination to understand her experiences through the prism of her own Christian-religious faith sets this case apart from many others and makes it problematic for some researchers; but Fowler, a Christian convert himself, nevertheless remains open-minded and keeps admirably to the scientific method despite the high strangeness of the data.

The detailed recall Betty has of her abductions under professional hypnosis continues to mark this case out as significant. She always was an excellent hypnotic subject. A few outlandish and frankly horrific details (such as the abductors removing her eyeball to insert implants into her brain, then re-seating the eyeball again into its socket) had never been reported to researchers prior to this case, but later came up again and again in other cases. Betty's detailed artistic drawings of her abduction adventures are another aspect of this case which marks it out as unusual and interesting.

In the final chapters, Fowler tackles some of the more puzzling and enigmatic day-to-day phenomena experienced by the Lucas and frequently attendant to other abductees. Chapter 12, "The Psychic Element in UFO Reports", could stand on its own as a most fascinating essay: the Pentagon's expressed interest in psychic phenomena experienced by members of a military helicopter team following an encounter; poltergeist activity and temporary missing items (like keys) which inexplicably reappear in full view after hours or days are common to abductees. Fowler explores theories about these and how they fit in with CEs. Chapter 13, "Mystery Copters and the MIB" details Bob Luca's attempts to get answers from the FAA and the military about the black helicopters which frequently circled over their homes (in CT and later in MA) and followed their car. The copters were unmarked, matt black, and flying well below the 500ft minimum altitude stipulated by aviation law. Many of Bob's close-up photographs of these black helicopters are reproduced in the book, as is his extensive correspondence with various authorities about the issue. He was certainly persistent, but without result. The weirdest phenomenon of all has to be the MIB, reported consistently over years by witnesses, experiencers and investigators and also a factor in this case.

The book concludes with a couple of chapters speculating on what might be going on, taking in the viewpoints of skeptics ("it's all psychological"), proponents of the ETI hypothesis and various religious paradigms, and Betty Andreasson's own beliefs about the events. All in all, this is a fascinating and thoughtful study of an important case and contributed significantly to understanding this strange but very real phenomenon. Ray Fowler is an intelligent man, a deep thinker and a good writer, and reading his books is always time well spent.

Fake-Satanic DIY-Diabolism...

This book is written by (yet another) self-styled "Satanic Philosopher", self-ordained "Satanist" and self-opinionated "Satanic expert". It is yet another manifestation of the phenomenon of Fake-Satanism, which is basically a genre of self-published text-books, manuals and tracts - each one so unambiguously, arrogantly and blatantly ripping-off the great, original writings of Anton LaVey that it makes one seriously wonder if Copyright Law still exists. The online, self-publishing avenue means that just about any giftless goombah can now call himself a "Satanist", publish his own "Diabolical Manifesto" and then sit back and bask in ego-fuelled self-delusion.

According to the blurb, the author of "The Satanic Testament", Alexandrue Lucifer Ravensloft LeGivorden - (and if that's his real name then I'll eat my inverted crucifix) - is "an ordained Reverend in the Satanic religion". In careful consideration of the 1001 different sects, orders, covens and other truly pathetic collectives that each claim to be a "Satanic Group" nowadays, this statement could mean just about anything. One thing is absolutely certain: "Lucifer" ain't no Satanist in the authentic, LaVeyan sense, and the idea that any character of his ilk could ever be a Registered Member - let alone a Reverend - in the Church of Satan is about as likely as my catching veneral disease from a Martian. We are also told that "Lucifer" used to be "a Wiccan High Priest" before deciding to "become" a Satanist. Well, nobody decides to become a Satanist. Besides which (or should that be 'Witch'?) anybody who would actually "defect" from Wicca to Satanism is advertising the fact that they know everything about Wicca but nothing about Satanism.

This hotchpotch of unoriginal, extremely derivative scribblings actually begins with an (unintentionally) informative section called: "The Creeds Of Satanism", where "Lucifer" compares several different lists of doctrinal statements, written by the heads of several different Satanic Groups. The idea of this is to illustrate the alleged "differences in doctrinal thought" to the reader, which are falsely assumed to exist "within Satanism". Despite the notion that there exist many "various forms" of Satanism being complete and utter balderdash, this section displays the extent to which Anton LaVey's "Nine Satanic Statements" have been mercilessly cut, copied, pasted, plundered and appropriated by sub-moronic LaVey copyists, emulators and wannabes.

After this, the book goes emphatically and inexorably downhill: "Lucifer" has an obsession about the existence of what he repeatedly refers to as "The Satanic Community": something that - in reality - does not exist. By definition, a Satanist is an Outsider; an Exile; an Individualist. The fact that people feel the incessant need to huddle together (like the herd animals they are) is one of the most repugnant, repellant aspects of human nature to a genuine Satanist. The completely oxymoronic term "Satanic Community" is diametrically opposed to the force of Independence, Individuation and Individualism that lies at the very heart of the concept of Satan. Innumerable, dysfunctional, angry assembly-line "dress-in-black Diabolists" and "professional rebels" who flock to the 1001 online Goth/Black Metal chat-rooms and "Satan Fan-Clubs" in existence nowadays is NOT a "Satanic Community": it is a virtual delusion that panders to the herd instinct that draws collectivist, weak and frightened people together, and which has arbitrarily and amusingly been dubbed "The Satanic Community" in an infantile attempt to give the knuckle-scrapers involved a sense of "belonging". It is a meaningless name which has been given to an idealistic, phantom concept: a haven for the confused, the stupid and the weak.

Read on, and we have guidelines for the ritual sacrifice of an animal as a part of an alleged Satanic Ceremony. Clearly "Lucifer" has about as much in-depth knowledge of genuine Satanism as does a hobo about making millions of dollars. The actual view of real, bona fide Satanists towards hurting, torturing or harming animals in any way - let alone sacrificing them in a ritual - is that the perpetrators of such vile, mindless, sub-moronic acts should have dealt out to them precisely what they have inflicted upon the animal.

The rest of this offering is a clear Anton LaVey rip-off: right up to the "Rituals of Initiation & Ordainment" appendices, the source for this allegedly being "The Grotto Masters Handbook", written by... (you guessed it!): "Anon". Try LaVey's "Satanic Rituals" for the real source of the "inspiration". After repeatedly criticising, denouncing and accusing the Original & Genuine throughout his book, "Lucifer" nevertheless sees fit here to arrogantly reproduce the Church of Satan's very own, fully copyrighted Symbol of Baphomet.

The 21st Century's sad, talentless breed of self-styled, self-published Fake Satanists (in which "Lucifer" has here unambiguously declared himself a major player), stubbornly insist that their writings are "invaluable contributions" to what they claim is a Satanism of different strands, takes, philosophies and other Left-Hand Path "traditions" that simply DO NOT exist - while each ripping-off Anton LaVey up to the hilt to make a buck and jerking-off at the sight of their "groundbreaking Satanic works" appearing in (self-published) print. The Unholy Truth is that there are NO 57 varieties, branches or denominations of Satanism: There is only the One, Original and Genuine codification of Satanism as formulated by Anton Szandor LaVey and enshrined in the Church of Satan. The 57 varieties are of 3rd rate emulators, imitators, copyists, con-artists, rip-off merchants and outright Walter Mitty Fake-Satanists. This is not an extreme, uncompromising or absolutist viewpoint; nor is it unrealistic or idealistic: It is a long-established, well recognized, solid and irrefutable fact.

very enlightening

While not a satanist myself, I like to learn about other religions, and Satanism was one of them. what I've found is that Satanism is a very unorganized religion, with no one having a solid idea of what all of them should stand for, while the credo is ultimately that ones self is the ultimate god. the satanic testament gives a very well thought out entrance to the religion itself. It gives the reader a varied amount of information and lets them take from it what they will.

Though disagreeing with the author on several points, I found a lot of what he said not only accurate but struck quite a cord with me in my experience of Satanism over the past 15yrs. The author definitely has been involved in Internet Satanism for quite some time. If your only experience in Satanism is via the Internet this will be a great read. Highly recommend!
