This book tells the story of this groundbreaking installation, from its conceptualization through its unveiling--in formal and documentary photographs, diagrams and studies. The art historian and author of Mark Rothko's catalogue raisonné, David Anfam, contributes a text, as do Rothko's son, Christopher Rothko, and the artist.
Michael Somoroff was born in New York City in 1957. He works in photography, installation, filmmaking, writing and a variety of new media technologies. His work is in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.

Transforming illumination into a tangible sculpture

This well designed and well written and illustrated book concerns the installation of a sculpture by Michael Somoroff in 2006 - 2007 outside the Rothko Chapel in Houston, Texas. David Anfam opens the book with an essay about how the commission was established and the work completed and installed. In his words, the sculpture relates to the spiritual elements of Mark Rothko's wondrous canvases on many levels. ` Generated form an array of hi-tech software programs, hands-on collaborative expertise in the crafting of the sculpture proper, wide-ranging empirical observations and personal reflections both political and ontological in nature, Illumination I promises a rich physical experience graced with an equally metaphysical dimension. In this respect, Somoroff's project renews Rothko's artistic endeavor which, in a nutshell, sought to combine perceptual immediacy with spiritual import. As Rothko said upon completing the Chapel paints, "I wanted to paint both the finite and the infinite."

The book shows all the preliminary drawings and manipulation of those drawings that brought the huge white uprising flow of energy that depicts the way light pours through a chapel dome. According to the artist's concept, `It is the world as seen though the lens of one's own ego. The ego provides a breeding ground for more separation by encouraging hatred, anger, bitterness, discrimination, all false sensations of division and the very foundations of evil.' He fond his inspiration for the sculpture not only in the cathedrals of the past but also in the tenor of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and it is this coming together of ancient and present history that he celebrates. ` Waling together, lovingly, we can change ourselves and the world around us. It is up to each of us. Every moment is indeed a defining one. It is my hope that somehow this wonderful opportunity to collaborate with the Rothko Chapel and on so many others by placing Illumination on the campus of the chapel will somehow serve to teach all of us the "togetherness".

The sculpture is no longer present on the grounds of the Rothko Chapel. I was made of stucco and it ages. But it is such an important concept and artwork and line of developing thinking that its absence makes this beautiful book all the more important. Grady Harp, May 12

If you like complete surrender in response to complete domination, then you will like this book. Hot! This was so hot I needed relief part way through.

Jenny is a novice sister in the Pessumae Christi. She is ready to face her initiation where the charismatic Father Sinclair awaits to deliver her trails and to judge her readiness and worthiness. He is joined by 4 other monks who will also initiate Jenny into her new role as a Sister in the Order of Pessumae Christi, (Pessumae is the Latin word for tool and it is a female word) Oh my does she relish being used as the tool by the Priests and Monks in order to help them to perform their holy good works.

Clearly, this is no love story and anyone who is expecting one... well I've got some property in Florida I'd like to sell you. This doesn't even register on my cruelty scale, highly humiliating, extremely dominating, and erotic as hell (or heaven) with some tender moments and a little bit of bondage and spanking sprinkled in to add some spice to the domination by Father Sinclair. A two panty read!

This was such a hot read i purchased the second book immediately after finishing. This book could possibly also fall under GBin so if that isnt your fortay you might not like it. The story itself was extremely detailed, hot, addictive and delicious. I was disappointed to see the third book is not available yet, but i look forward to reading linns other books and stories. PLEASE keep the hot stories coming. My husband thanks you. ;-)

About the Author
David Grazian is an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania, where he teaches courses on popular culture and mass media, urban sociology, and ethnographic methods. Over 400 students take his sociology of popular culture and mass media course each semester, making it one of the largest courses at the University of Pennsylvania. In his research he uses ethnographic and other qualitative methods to study the production and consumption of commercial entertainment in cities. Knowledge dense and relevant...

I needed this book as a companion to another one for a Master's level class. Judging a book by its cover does not apply here. While its size makes it appear like an easy read, it is packed with relevant and knowledge dense information which makes it a great resource for the psychology of customer buying habits and motivation.

My only suggestion is to make it available in an Nook version and Audible version.

Best sociology book on pop culture out there

Want to improve your Spanish? Here's the book for you!

Don Quijote is the book I always meant to read in college! Back then, my Spanish was pretty decent, but today... well, it's not what it used to be. But I got another chance, thanks to this innovative idea.

You can think of this book as an intermediate course/refresher in Spanish. Basically, you get the English version and the Spanish version in one book, and you can choose how much of both you want or need. The Author's Introduction comes first, translated into English, and then it's like a Choose Your Own Adventure: Do I want the Author's Introduction in Spanish? Do I want to jump to the Dedication in Spanish? Or maybe the Dedication in English? At the end of each section, you can make the choice based on how your reading is going.

I love this idea, and I really hope to see more interactive translations like this in the future!
