Kickin' Butt and Takin' Names

This is one of my favorite books of all time. It was the first book that ever really explained OO in an understandable and compelling way!
Peter Coad offers an excellent, real world approach to modelling using Object Oriented Design. This book optimally fits in with the rest of the series (OOA & OOP) but serves as a stand-alone as well. I bought this book ages ago and still keep it handy. Although the field has evolved since the writing and Peter has expanded his approach and embraced UML as well, the book still serves as an excellent resource for Software engineers.

Good, but doesn't delve into

Good because it clearly separates analysis from design matters. The five layers-four components approach clarifies what must be done, when and where the results must be put, but it remains an overview of the design process (just the central part of the book is really dedicated to it). It's a good companion to OOA by the same authors. Useful the list at the end of the book either about analysis and design indications to follow to develop projects using their methodology. The chapter about the programming languages contains various syntax errors. I consider this the last in the rank of the three books (OOA, OOD, OOP).

Great way to learn OO concepts

I recently purchased the whole series of Object-Oriented books by Peter Coad. I first studied OO programming way back when these first came out. I still find them relevant today for learning and reviewing the concepts. Many colleges today focus on teaching a language and students don't understand the concepts that go into the development of that language. So the interns I work with, I ask them to review these books so they can get a better grasp of the concepts. They find the material pretty dense, but always come out of it a far better programmer.

Structural Masonry Design

This book is a good source of information in regards to masonry design; it is fairly complete and is easy to comprehend. I wish it had more in depth examples however.

Currently I am more involved in project management; however, once and a while I get the change to do some structural design or evaluate the work of other engineers. This book is a good source of current code updates for me.

Not bad but not amazing

This book is not bad...but it's not amazing either. For all of you who may not be aware, this is actually a newer "version" of The New Encyclopedia of the Dog: http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Encyclopedia-Dog/dp/B008GO071Y/ref=pd_cp_b_2 The New Encyclopedia of the Dog 2nd (second) edition by Bruce Fogle that was published in 2000 by DK as well. In fact, it uses a lot of the text as well as the pictures from the latter. HOWEVER, it does include a few more breeds such as the Taiwanese Mountain dog, Boerboel and Russian Toy but the descriptions are watered down A LOT. Furthermore, the old book showed full-body pictures of all the different hair lengths and sizes for every single breed while this book only shows one or two full body pics while just leaving the rest as head shots. This issue is particularly severe for breeds that exhibit both size diversity and hair length diversity (such as the dachshund, where only the long-haired standard got a full body pic while in the old book, all three hair types of all three conventional sizes plus an additional "dwarf " size got full body pics). Finally, a breed in the old book, the Prazky Krysarik or Prague Ratter, never even got a mention in this one. If you want more breeds, this book will suffice, but if you want a more complete book that fully talks about every breed, then the old book is still better.

Good book if you want to see lots of pictures

I was a little disappointed in this book because I thought it would have more helpful information about breed specific behaviors in dogs. The pictures of the breeds are very good, though.

Exactly What I wanted.

This book provides clear photos and basic information on a few hundred breeds of dogs. I was worried that it would not represent enough of the breeds, perhaps only featuring one or another of the kennel clubs, but I'm glad to say that it is more than sufficient. Owners looking for a new dog may find the volume lacking in information on breed traits, but I really don't think that it's realistic to get all of that from an encyclopedia. Rather, this book excels at helping someone identify breeds, explore relationships among breeds, and such of that. There is an introduction with some neat information on dogs (their evolutionary journey, anatomy, etc.) and a concluding section on dog care (which I admittedly found unneccesary in an encyclopedia, but I won't take off for the filler pages). Also, very importantly, the index in the back is organized very well; looking up a dog breed there will find every reference to the breed listed in normal font, and the breed's main page listed in bold. This means that it is easy to find a breed by name, and also easy to find where that breed may be discussed in comparison to other breeds. Final note, this book is much larger than I thought it would be.

Dark, intense, sensual, and thought-provoking

Before I start, I need to say that readers really need to pay attention to the warnings on this. There are graphic scenes of sexual violence and dubious consent (not normally a phrase I like because I just call that "rape," but it's the best description in this case). The main plot is about a rape trial, and the usual victim-blaming tactics are used by the defense. It's clear those are harmful, but even so, it could be hard for some people to read due to triggers or to being highly sensitive.

That said, I loved this book. I was excited to read it, since I read the first one and thought it was fantastic. It is absolutely necessary to read the first one for context.

I'm a sucker for a story that's thoroughly researched, well-written, and has a lot of plot---particularly if it revolves around a social issue. This book did not disappoint, even though it's pretty hardcore erotica. That level of sex isn't usually my thing (nor do I typically choose books with non-consensual sex). But the characters are compelling, and the story draws you in.

As I mentioned, this is erotica, so there is a lot (and I do mean a LOT) of sex, with a wide range of emotional interaction in each scene. The three main characters---Akad, Marduk, and Aya---are all gods. They have apparently never learned to communicate what they're actually thinking or feeling, so there are a number of misunderstandings before they get their happy-for-now ending (until the next book, of course).

Marduk was my favorite in the last book, and I still adore him. I think he largely represents the rational mind. He's steady and thoughtful, compared to Aya's sensitive heart and Akad's temper. He's had both of the other gods as lovers, and he balances them. I enjoyed seeing his character development since the last book.

I may possibly have been just a little in love with Aya. I wanted to protect him after everything he had to endure. Watching him suffer through the trial was intense and heartbreaking. He had disappointed me so much in the first book, but I was happy to see he'd grown as well.

Akad still feels like an unknown, aloof and with a simmering temper. He's protective of the ones he loves, and he will clearly go to any length for them. It will be interesting to see where his story arc goes. Of the three, I feel like I know him least.

The sex in these stories does not always fit into neat categories of relationship vs. rape. It is always clear in these novels where the lines are between consensual, romantic/erotic sex, consensual but emotionless/necessary sex, and non-consensual sex. However, these are gods, and they use sex in various ways to enhance and wield their power. What makes that interesting is how it's used during the trial to increase the atmosphere of victim-blaming which Aya and Marduk have to battle.

Be prepared to bring your thinking game to this book. It's not light and fluffy, and it's not pure escapism. It requires some thought and concentration to process the multiple angles and scenarios. It's extremely well done, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

M/M angst and steam for the gods

Just what I'de expect from this author, emotional angst, steamy scenes and occasional dubious consent in a M/M romantic tumultuous setting.
The story follows Aya, a rather feminine dream god who together with Marduk, are the victims and witnesses in a trial of three of the most powerful gods in creation who sexually abused them for a significant amount of time. I don't do spoilers but safe to say, the evil gods aren't overly keen on being convicted, and Aya is forced to seek protection from Marduk's new lover, the supreme god Akad. Problem is, Aya knows Marduk is the love of his life, but Marduk only has eyes for Akad.
Revelations and responsibilities, weakness and power, domination and submission all combine to make this a page turner, although if 'dark' doesn't float your boat, J. Johanis isn't the author for you, but if it does..

I loved the in-depth look at the characters

It took me a while to read both installments of the S-Gods, and thought I found the world fascinating, Ms Johanis thoughts and understanding of Mythology and the Fantasy world around them gripping ... I felt Dream God lacked consistency as where Claimed by the Order felt drawn out to a point that I kept putting it to the side to get back too later.

I loved the in-depth look at the characters, how they functioned, felt... their emotional response and how something as simple as just a touch could affect the outcome of any set scene.

That said, humiliation is not a book kind for me, I felt it was over used in the plot and some scenes seemed forced into a darker space.

I found the writing enjoyable, but repetitive, some words placed into text that did not fit or did not work with the feel of the piece at the time.

Personally I would recommend reading both installments back to back, the flow from one story line into the next worked best over the two books.

What I did find was that the story lends it self to natural breaks in the scenes and I appreciated that. One piece could be read, the story put down and than picked up later.

Due to the heavy erotic-non-con-rape content, I would suggest all readers enter this series with caution. Make sure you understand what your about to read and to that fact the following;

I know this has been said a million times and to me this is an important part of the genre you write in. BDSM tags should not be used in books depicting rape and hardcore non-con.

How readers connect bondage, domination and rape to BDSM I'm not sure. The world we live is not colored with rose glassed and one should see it as it is. This is Sub Genre - Torture Porn.

A gutwrenching and inspiring story of the son of Ron Reagan

Michael Reagan with brutal honesty, and a whole lot guts, tells the gutwrenching but inspiring story of his much traveled life. From living a childhood that included such traumatic experiences as: being ridiculed for being adopted, being brutally molested by a camp councellor, having his parents divorce,and being constantly switched to different boarding schools,Michael grew up feeling very low about himself, and contemplated suicide on several occasions. His young adulthood was marred by consusion and self destructive behavior. While in his twenties Michael racked up staggering debt, had a failed marriage, and was dogged by a failure to hold down a steady job. While the young Michael was not extemly proud of his irresponsible lifestyle he had no great desire to reform himself because his parents, namely his mother, would always bail him out. It was in meeting his current wife Colleen that Michael experienced the turning point of his life. Colleen quickly let it be known that Michael's lifestyle was unaccaptable, and would have to be ended if they were to be together. This was to be Michael's ephinany, and it started the turnaround that allowed him to exorcise the deamons of his past, live a blessed, and honest life, and fully reconcile with his father. This book is sure to be an inspiration to anyone who has lived a trying life, and will provide valuable lessons to anyone who feels as though they are alone and that their life is spinning out of control.

A great book for the intelligent reader

My impressions of this book may seem somewhat surprising. I bought it primarily to find out why Michael Reagan was so distant from his father and so detached from the broader Reagan family, and yet seems to be the embodiment of Ronald Reagan's political philosophy. What I got, instead, was a more important story and much more than that. I came to see this not so much as the story of Michael Reagan, but more as the classic example of a truly dysfunctional family. To me, it became the story of love and affection gone wrong. It was populated with family members who obviously cared about each other but seldom saw things the same way. The players always seemed to talk past each other and, no matter what they tried; they continually worked at cross purposes. I couldn't help but wonder: how many other American families act in just this same way and how many adopted children shared Michael's fears and feelings? This book isn't just about Michael Reagan. It is about life in America and the inner workings of a classically dysfunctional family.

Caught between two families, the Reagans and Jane Wyman, but feeling that he doesn't belong to either one, Michael Reagan takes the reader through a gut wrenching childhood of presumed privilege which often works against him and which is filled with thoughts of loneliness, unworthiness, and the constant fear of not being wanted; all as seen through the eyes of a child. One can only wonder how many other adopted children have shared these feelings. Then, even when he begins to feel that he might belong and that he is really wanted, he is once again put down. Brought home from boarding school and expecting his own room he is instead made to sleep on the couch so a servant can have a room of her own. Then it's back to boarding school; with more loneliness and fear.

To make matters worse, Michael is molested as a child and the child molester goes so far as to take nude pictures of him. This brings further shame, a sense of unworthiness, fear of being a homosexual, and a long-standing fear that he will be exposed bringing shame to his family. It might have helped if he had been able to tell someone, but how many children would be able to do that. Instead, he lived with it untold until this book was written.

In looking at all the characters in this book it seems impossible to say who, if anyone, was really at fault, or if they all just got caught up in something over which they had no control. In my view, though, by sharing his story with such brutal honesty, Michael Reagan has done a service not only to himself, but to his family and to the country at large. I've always admired him. I admire him even more after reading this biography. As a matter of fact, I couldn't put it down...

This book is so cool. Building a great shelter for hens is indeed awesome especially for the winter season. It is absolutely a must to prepare chicken coops to stand the coldness of the season. This book comes with a dvd and a cd wchich both add to your ability to quickly grasp the concept of playing a musical instrument. I have tried learning music by myself before, and had no luck, but this system is different. I literally takes you through each page of the book, shows you the valve fingerings, teaches you the techniques of blowing into the mouthpeice to achieve each note, etc., then gives you a partner on the screen to play along with! It makes learning fun and interesting. I highly recommend this learning tool to anyone who is seriosly considering a musical instrument, but who doesn't have the time to take conventional classes, not to mention the cost!
