Decent followup to a fun superhero series

If you read the first Priscilla the Great, then you know what to expect: a fun, middle-school take on a standard superhero trope (heroine has superpowers, is in hiding from evil institution which wants to control her for their own evil schemes, and needs to juggle secret identity with regular life). I liked it almost as much as the first in the series, but a cliffhanger ending and repeated campiness make it slightly less successful for me.

Plot Premise

This story takes place a couple months after the end of the first book. Priscilla has a lot going on. She's in a bit of a love triangle, her mom has lost her powers and is acting strangely, and she's adjusting to her new life in hiding. On top of that, she's taken over running the missions that her mom used to run and is trying to stay one step ahead of Colonel Selliwood and his evil compatriots.

The writing is first-person and chatty and works well when dealing with her interactions with people in her life. Her relationships with her brothers, friends, and parents are funny and heartwarming and believable, even when she's using her invisible jet and super powers to play pranks or get even with her little brothers.

Where the story stumbles a bit for me is the villains. I expect to need to suspend disbelief in this sort of story, but I found that the villains were so one-dimensional and their aims and methods were so pointlessly evil, that it seemed a little flat compared to the more complex characters in the good side. Similarly, the fights and scientific explanations are, of course, over-the-top unrealistic, but, by the second book, I find myself wishing they were a little something more. I don't think they're any different than in the first book, but after a while it gets predictable, which makes it less funny and suspenseful. And if it's not funny or suspenseful or poignant or believable, then why are we reading it? It could be just that I'm not the target audience though - I'm a mother in my late thirties and although I enjoy reading good kids and young adult books, I'm not actually a kid myself. All in all, I recommend the series in general and this book in particular if you're in the mood to turn off your brain and enjoy a little escapism.

My Daughter Loves These

I'm writing this on behalf of my eleven-year-old daughter, who just finished Kiss of Life last night. I've never heard her laugh so hard and so often as she did during these two books. It got to the point where other people in the house started growling at her and she would run out of the room to laugh or stuff a pillow over her face. Her only gripe is that the book seemed to end on something of a cliffhanger and she was frustrated that book #3 is not yet available.

Not Just for Young Adults

I know this book is geared to teens but Priscilla is a lovable witty character that older people (ie a young mom such as myself) can appreciate. What stands out the most for me are the often humorous sibling dynamics; my husband had to ask several times why I was laughing so much. The transitions from scene to scene flowed well (just just finished a book that didn't and man did I ever appreciate this).

Only one small thing annoyed me. Since the first book hooked me, all the details were still fresh in my mind. The constant recaps slowed down my reading a smidgen and made me roll my eyes while thinking... I know I know, what's next? I think a lot more new content could have been added to change things up a little and like someone else already stated more time should have been spent on the villains. Hopefully the next book will have a little less recap. Annoyance aside, I still love this series.

About the Author
Abigail Strom started writing stories at the age of seven and has never been able to stop. On her way to becoming a full-time writer, she earned a BA in English from Cornell University as well as an MFA in dance from the University of Hawaii, and held a wide variety of jobs from dance teacher and choreographer to human resource manager. Prepare to have your emotions played with!

I loved this story. I loved how it played with my emotions and had me really invested in the characters, in spite of how frustrated they made me. Rikki and Sam had so much angst between them that it gave me the fireworks. They spent years oblivious and completely misunderstanding each other, and throughout the book I just wanted to shake some senses into them. There were moments that made me laugh, and there were moments that made me want to cry. Yeah, like I said, the emotions were definitely there.

I connected with Rikki in the sense that she liked holding on to control. I understood her character and felt like she was as realistic as an eighteen year old trying to figure out her life gets. I liked the family she came from, and I admired her determination and her drive to focus on her education and excel at everything. She was very intellectual, and I think the greatest thing about the story is that Rikki and Sam connected based on something they had in common: they were both very smart and always performed at their utmost best. And I loved that there wasn't an insta-love or constant gushing over one's appearance, but they were attracted to each other's minds. Their relationship wasn't the best at start, but after several years of competing in academics and misunderstanding their feelings for each other, I was happy when they realized there was no hate and decided to be friends in college. I felt like had they not done that, then they wouldn't have been able to spend more time learning about each other and developing clarity about their true feelings.

Sam was such a good person. He wasn't the typical model-like guy found in most YA books, and he wasn't a star athlete, but he was sort of a nerd with great qualities and the type of guy I swooned over because he was cute in his own way. He had to deal with loss and some other issues in his family, and it was so sad how he liked Rikki in secret all that time but believed she wasn't interested in him because of her silly crushing on the supposedly good-looking guys in school. It was funny how in the end, they both admitted to thinking the other wasn't interested and hence thought it was best to start pining over someone else. But their feelings were so strong that trying to be with someone else never worked out for either of them.

Gosh, there's so much I could go on about but I don't want to spoil it too much for anyone who hasn't read the story. All I can say is that you'll definitely feel like plucking your lashes out over the relationship between Rikki and Sam, and your emotions will be scattered from beginning to end. These characters didn't only go through high school completely oblivious and often in denial about each other, it continued to university. So you can only imagine how much their craziness will frustrate readers. Aside from the constant back and forth, there were juicy moments and some humor thrown in the mix to keep things interesting. The writing is great, and the pacing is quick. Not necessarily light, but this book will indeed make you feel things. I highly recommend.

I so don't get it. Most of the story was entertaining enough. The hero and heroine, although they fought too much and for too long, were likable.
They discover that they are both virgins. The sexual tension continues to grow. Then around 85% of the story, right before the heroine is going to give herself to the hero, she finds out that he lost his virginity the night before. He threw away his gift - the gift they were to give each other. For a meaningless encounter. Why the hey would an author do that? So not cool. It ruined the romance and the book for me.

Fun, lightly dramatic, New Adult, enemies-to-lovers plot

College freshmen, Rikki Eisendrath and Sam Payne, have been each other's chief scholastic competitors and, from Rikki's perspective, full out enemies for the past six years. But when they end up in the same dorm, at the same college, Rikki decides that now that they are officially adults, it's time to call a truce with Sam. Gradually the two progress from an uneasy d�tente to the tentative beginnings of real friendship. Then Sam, whom Rikki learns is quite a talented sculptor in addition to being a math and science genius, asks her to serve as his model. Though he doesn't ask her to model nude, she models in a swimsuit and in order to feel less on display, she insists that Sam wear a swimsuit as well. Rikki's plan backfires, however, when seeing Sam half naked makes her far too aware that years of sports and working out have given Sam a gorgeous physique. An unexpectedly powerful sexual attraction toward her longtime nemesis begins to threaten Rikki's comfort with her newly softened feelings for Sam.

I believe this author, as a purposeful creative decision, has written this book in first person point of view so that Sam's feelings and motivations toward Rikki remain as much a mystery to the reader as they are to Rikki. This adds a great deal of romantic conflict to the story, because it makes it possible for the truth about Sam's feelings toward Rikki to not be revealed until near the end of the book.

Interestingly to me, this book carries some intriguing echoes of the classic children's book, Anne Of Green Gables. I have no way of knowing if this was a conscious homage on the author's part, but it would be fun if it were. Much like Rikki, Anne develops an intense resentment toward Gilbert when she is 11. In Anne's case, it is because he calls her, "Carrots," as a teasing insult to her red hair, which is the bane of Anne's existence. She refuses to forgive poor Gilbert up until she is 18 or so, creating antagonism between them for the same length of time that Rikki and Sam are enemies in this book. Also like Rikki and Sam, Anne and Gilbert incessantly engage in scholastic rivalry all through the years that Anne treats him as an enemy.

I love a good "nerds in love" plot, and I had high hopes on reading the premise of this book that the author had written it as romantic comedy but, alas, it is instead light drama. Nevertheless, as light drama it is very well written. I really liked Sam, and there is a great deal of intense emotion between him and Rikki, always a terrific thing to encounter in a romance novel. I was never bored or tempted to skim this novel, which in itself is high praise, because as an extremely jaded romance reader, I have a high threshold for boredom.

I particularly liked that Sam is not a clich�, New Adult, "bad boy" hero. He has no tattoos, doesn't sleep around, and rarely drinks alcohol. Rikki is a virgin, which is always a refreshing change of pace in a NA romance, and in a touch of plot humor that contrasts comically with her own innocence, she vigorously scolds one of the male subcharacters for daring to "slut shame" the sexual experience of her fellow coeds.

The fact that Rikki is a bit of a fusspot as well as a nerd is not uncommon in NA romance heroines in general, but it doesn't happen enough to be as much of a clich� as the "man whore" male protagonist. In my humble opinion, she is an intriguing heroine with a strong voice and plausible motivations for her actions.

Overall, I found both Rikki and Sam to be quite sympathetic characters, and in terms of their intelligence, drive, and overall attractiveness and likability, I believe they are a very good match and co-equal in power within their relationship. In other words, I thank my lucky stars there is no domineering, Alpha-male dynamic in this story, which has been done to death in NA romance.

All in all, this book is very well written and I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Very worthwhile book on the topic

I have read many computing books and I can say this is an excellent introduction to the topic. Topics are presented clearly, with concepts building on each other in a logical manner. The author does not avoid the matrix algebra underpinnings of animation, which allows the reader who makes the effort to undertake even the most complex tasks. If you are undertaking a web design and expect to use CSS animation or transitions, I think you found your guide.

Exceptionally well written technical book

8 stars for the author, Steven Bradley, negative-7 stars for the publisher, Pearson Education, which includes the imprints Peachpit (this book) and Adobe Press. Informit.com handles web distribution of their ebooks if you don't buy it directly from Amazon (I recommend you purchase from Amazon if you need the Kindle format).

The content of the book is excellent. The topic is fairly small in scope, but it was precisely what I was looking for. I'm not and have never been a professional web designer, but I am responsible for 2 small static websites. They were both put up years ago, and have gotten pretty stale, so I wanted to freshen them up, but I need some inspiration. I also need to brush up my skills. I got both out of this book. Don't get me wrong, if you're just starting out, this isn't the book for you (yet -- but come back when you get that under your belt!). But if you have the basic skills, this book is perfect. I should also mention I was a programmer in a previous life, so code doesn't scare me and I already have the mind set to debug my own code.

Because of the small scope, he's able to dive in pretty thoroughly. He devotes a chapter each to transforms, transitions, and animations, how they work, and exercises to work through. Then having laid the groundwork, he provides a wonderful context for them by laying out Disney's rules of animation. Finally, a few chapters covering the more realistic needs that web designers actually face, such as sliding sidebars and so forth, perfect for the world of multiple devices and 'media-queries' that any web designer now faces.

What really pleased me about this book is that his writing style is not only very straight-forward, it's very readable. Too many technical books these days are written with too many boilerplate phrases thrown in. For example, instead of "open the file 'example 4_8'" you get "Go to your main menu and choose file > open. Then in the dialog that opens, in the textbox for file, type in 'example 2_8' (without the quote marks)". That's fine in the first chapter, but all the way through the book?!? The other thing I've found is that sometimes the author bends over backwards to keep it friendly by cracking jokes, which, again, is fine early in a book, but wears thin about halfway through. Just stick to your content! And Steven Bradley does that admirably well. In an e-mail exchange with the author, I mentioned how well he writes. He replied that he just writes the way he'd like to be talked to. Sorry, but it's more than that; this man has a gift for writing technical books.

What pleased me the most was that after working through the examples in the book, I finally started to get some inspiration about some ideas for the websites I need to work on.

Now for the publisher. I bought the ebook version of this book directly from Pearson rather than Amazon because they offered a steep, short-term discount. In the introduction, Mr. Bradley tells you how to get the exercises for the book by registering the book at Peachpit. This takes you to the informit.com website of Pearson, and lists all the books you've registered with them, and is supposed to have links associated with each book where downloads are available with the book. No link. I sent an e-mail to customer service on 1/21/2015 stating the relevant info about the book and that the download is missing. As it happens I've run into this problem before with this publisher, so I cc'd the author on the e-mail. I got a very quick response from the author, promising if the publisher was not responsive, he would send them to me directly. Two days later I got a reply from Informit Customer Service informing me once I let them know what bonus content I was looking for, they'd be back in contact with me! I was speechless! Needless to say, the author sent me the files immediately. But to cut this sad saga short, the link was finally posted February 10th, 20 days after I first contacted them. I finished the book and all the exercises before then! You can find plenty of other instances of this issue of mssing downloads from this particular publisher in other reviews on Amazon of other books by Peachpit and Adobe Press.

I believe this issue should be resolved by now for all purchasers of the book, so don't hesitate to buy it on the basis of the second half of this review, but if it's not, please add a comment to this review!

Great Source book for beginners!

I have been taking free courses through Microsoft virtual academy and was hoping to learn some new techniques with this book. Unfortunately I found that there wasn't a lot of new information. I was really hoping for more in depth examples. However had I come at the book with fresh eyes, and no prior knowledge of CSS capabilities these days it would definitely be a great resource! The books topic organization flow is also five stars in my opinion,
