Not a Magic Wand

Buying this book did not give me the skill necessary to draw realistically. Some of it is a rehash of Drawing on the Right Side of Your Brain, but that one didn't help me much, either. Much acclaimed by those with talent, for those of us who have to struggle it's not a magic wand.

A classic!

First published in 1970, this book has become a classic! A book like this will not remain in print for 46 years unless it has extreme value.

As the title suggests, it teaches everything an artist needs to know to learn to draw accurately and realistically. The author's premise is that no matter what style or medium is used by the artist, it is first necessary to learn to draw realistically and accurately. He then does an excellent job of teaching the artist to do just that!

He begins simply. The first lesson is how to draw a straight line freehand. Then he teaches how to draw the basic forms that all objects are based on and later shows how to utilize those forms to draw anything you can see.

Perspective, light and shade, values, perspective, composition are all essential topics that are clearly taught with assigned exercises to practice on. Any subject, from landscapes to still lifes, portraits and figurative studies is taught. The best thing about this method is that all you really need to start with is a #2 pencil and a sheet of paper.

All the drawings in the book are in black and white as well as the values in between. He starts with the #2 pencil but than proceeds to cover charcoal,mwatercolor washes, opaque (gouache) washes, acrylic, and ink. Thenaddition of liquid mediums is a feature that I have notmseen in other books on drawing but it makes for a very helpful transition to painting in color.

Most art books seem to contain very few essential concepts or techniques and then simply use a lot of space explaining and expanding on them. In other words, most other art books have a lot of "filler". This book is different in that it covers each concept clearly and concisely so that more comcepts and techniques can be covered. A lot of concentrated teaching that the student soends time practicing. This make the book a great value! It truly covers everything needed to learn to draw what you see.

This is appropriate for beginners as well as experienced artists. An outstanding art book!

Rudy de Reyna is a past instructor with the Famous Artists School. All his books are worth having and studying (I like specially his book on acrylic painting--I have had it for years and still refer to it for guidance). Years back, when I took up drawing and painting, I got this book and drew and painted my way through it. That way, I got a good grounding in drawing techniques, composition and various media like charcoal, transparent watercolor, opaque watercolor, acrylic and ink. The book is really an overview of these areas with some specific advice for each.
There are many other books that specialize--like oil painting, landscapes, portraits, watercolor, composition/design, etc. But if you are interested in getting into artwork, this one is a great way to get started and try out various media possibilities.

An intricately woven novel of love, hate

An intricately woven novel of love, hate, greed, power and forgiveness – A Doomsday Tale was captivating from the first page.

Set in England during the 11th century, Maggie Garfield has created such richly defined characters that are true not only to the time period, but true to the intricacies and temperaments that she has created for them. They leap from the page, grabbing your heart and mind until you find yourself completely enveloped in their story, cheering their victories and cursing their obstacles.

The world that is described around the characters and the story that is woven had me sitting for hours at a time, engrossed in this tale. I highly recommend this book – and absolutely cannot wait for the sequel to continue following the story that has ignited a curiosity and passion for a time period which I previously had no knowledge or interest in.

A Doomsday Tale translates well in the 21st century.

This story is fast paced. The historical characters are well-researched and the author makes them leap from the pages; their lust for power, their greed and, their frailties. The fictional characters, placed in the middle of the royals, are both heroes and victims that pluck at your emotions and effortlessly make you root for and care about them. Set in a time the history with which I'm only moderately familiar, I was impressed that the author wove details and explanations into the story that brought it all to life but didn't bog it down. An excellent read.

Pretty good, but a tough wall in the middle

As the title says, it's pretty good, walks you through some of the basics to get you playing. The slow and then faster versions of each song are a great way to feel like you're getting something done. However, between pages 29 and 30 it feels like a few pages are missing. Maybe some speed drills or something could have been added, because going from doing well on slow-ish quarter notes to completely stumbling over peppy eighth notes is a little tough and discouraging. If this was my only source of learning I might have quit when I hit it.

Best bass primer book I've found

This has been the most satisfying book for learning bass that I have come across. When Mr. Casey comes up with a bass primer II I would buy it in a minute. His teaching methods fit my style of learning. I am playing a Kala U-bass ukulele and, because the bass guitar and bass ukulele are tuned the same his instruction works perfect. Thank you Mr. Casey.

Well-researched, clever, but lacks thriller pacing

This mystery/thriller is well-written, and the author has clearly done her homework on her subject. But something about it just fell a little flat for me. The plot centers around Kate Stanley, a Shakespeare scholar turned theater director. Her former mentor leaves her a present and a message that she has found something important and wants Kate's help. Before Kate can meet with her again, the woman is killed in a Shakespearean way, and Kate is sucked into the mystery and must follow the clues.
Gradually, Kate--with the help of a veteran Shakespearean actor and a bodyguard hired by her mentor--figures out that her mentor has found a lost Shakespeare play and papers that may contribute to the real identity of Shakespeare. She follows the clues from London to various locations in the U.S. and back to Europe.
Yes, this sounds a bit like The Da Vinci Code, that against which all quest-type mystery-thrillers must be measured. The premise is similar, and the race against time is almost as manic in this book. However, there is more description and historical development in 'The Shakespeare Secret,' but it also lacks the maniacal pacing of The DV Code, and while the characters are better developed, the main character lacks depth to completely draw you into her drama.
For the amount of prose, the main characters needed more depth and the plot could have been a bit more compact. But there were clever plot twists, and the Boston and D.C. settings (the only ones with which I am familiar) were quite believable and gave a good degree of believability to the action.
Overall, I would recommend this as a slightly more worthwhile thriller than some, and it will last you a bit longer than many books you could pick up in an airport of the same genre. But if you want something that you absolutely can't put down for a moment because you are so caught up in the plot and characters, you could find something better. For a first mystery, which I believe it is, the author has shown a solid start.

A good first novel

By and large, I enjoyed "The Shakespeare Secret" very much and thought it was a good first novel. However, it is a cookie cutter knock-off of "The Da Vinci Code", down to the academic chasing after something worth a fortune, the attractive, mysterious accomplice and the older, aristocratic English confidante/helper who turns out to be not what he seems. The plot concerns the frenetic race to find a previously unpublished Shakespeare play hidden somewhere in the American west. The narrative races along at a brisk pace with numerous twists and turns. It is just unfortunate that the novel follows the construct of "The Da Vinci Code" so closely - I was left with a distinct feeling of deja vu after reading it. Some good moments, but...

The Shakespeare Secret is an easy read, and I had fun with it, but somehow the "secret" wasn't quite worth the build up. I love Shakespeare and followed the early chapters with interest, but couldn't quite buy the climax as it all came together. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I read it and as I said, I had fun with the book but the early build up deserved a more believable and well-thought out ending.
