Hooray For A Well-Written Transformational Change Success Story

This book is rock-solid. I don't work in the 'innovation space' per se, but found the book particularly helpful in thinking about transformational change. For those thinking about initiating a massive change effort, this book is a must read. It will give you a reality check as to what it really takes to pull it off. Transformation change is not for the faint of heart. This book reminded me that when undertaking a massive change effort of this magnitude:

***why steel-spine CEO sponsorship is a must-have. No weak-kneed wanna-be's allowed.

***why transformative change must be 'baked in'. That means management systems and all that goes with that must be modified to support the change. No cutting corners, no short-cuts.

***why a change of this magnitude takes a long time to bear significant fruit. Taking the long-view is imperative.

***why a story like Whirlpool's provides hope for others that transformational change is possible.

Whirlpool is an inspiring story. There is must to learn here. The book often addresses 'change' from a blocking and tackling perspective...but why shouldn't it. It's what made the Whirlpool story so compelling in the first place!

Good Information

As a guide to create an innovation program or embed innovation this book delivers for the most part. I was able to pull lessons out and implement. What was disappointing is when the authors discuss the Strategos Innovation tools. They fall short of actually providing the tools and explaining. They say that the tools are. "Strategos intellectual property." So what the reader is left with is a general frame work on an innovation program without the crucial tools to teach to the organization. I was hoping to at least get some idea or sample of the Strategos innovation tools for cheap.

Many books describe innovation systems without mentioning people. Some talk about people, but not the systems to execute on ideas. This book describes the integration of these two components -and in a real company in the middle of the multiyear implementation. If your role is to implement an innovation system in your organization, read this book.

About the Author
Dr. Richard P. DuFour was a public school educator for 34 years, serving as a teacher, principal, and superintendent. He served as the principal of Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois from 1983 1991 and as superintendent of the district from 1991 2002. During his tenure, Stevenson became what the United States Department of Education has described as the most recognized and celebrated school in America. Dr. DuFour is the author of eight books and more than 40 professional articles, and for almost a decade, a quarterly column for the Journal of Staff Development. He was the lead consultant and author for the ASCD s seven-part video series on principalship and is the author of two other videos, How to Build a Professional Learning Community and Through New Eyes: Examining the Culture of Your School. He was the first principal in Illinois to receive the Distinguished Educator award, the state s highest honor as both principal and superintendent; was named one of the top 100 school administrators in North America by Executive Educator magazine; was presented the Distinguished Scholar Practitioner award from the University of Illinois; and was the 2004 recipient of the National Staff Development Council s Distinguished Service award. He consults with school districts, state departments of education, and professional organizations throughout North America on strategies for improving schools. Dr. Robert Eaker, Ed.D., is the former executive vice president and provost at Middle Tennessee State University and former fellow with the National Center for Effective Schools Research and Development. Dr. Eaker has written widely on the issues of effective teaching, effective schools, helping teachers use research findings, and high expectations for student achievement. Dr. Eaker has spoken at numerous national meetings held by the National Association of Secondary School Principals, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, and National Center for Effective Schools Research and Development. He was also chosen by Phi Delta Kappa for the People in Educational Evaluation and Research interview series. He regularly consults with school districts throughout the nation regarding school improvement issues with content that is grounded in current research and that also addresses the concerns and problems of contemporary school practitioners. Drs. Eaker and DuFour co-authored Creating the New American School: A Principal s Guide to School Improvement and Whatever It Takes: How Professional Learning Communities Respond When Kids Don t Learn (with Rebecca DuFour and Gayle Karhanek). Their book, Getting Started: Reculturing Schools to Become Professional Learning Communities, co-authored with Rebecca DuFour, has sold over 53,000 copies since its release in March 2002. Drs. Eaker and DuFour are also co-editors of On Common Ground: The Power of Professional Learning Communities, a collection of essays by leading educational authors and consultants.

An excellent book written by one of the most important educators in relation to Professional Learning Communities. So many educators, start the year and barricade themselves inside their rooms and have little or no contact with other teachers. This book gives new and veteran teachers alike the basics of why to use the PLC, as well as how to set up the Professional Learning Community to benefit all teachers. And better teaching will have a positive impact on classroom instruction and student learning. This book is a must have for today's​ teachers.

Excellent Hadoop book, read this before you read the definitive guide

This book is excellent, and this is coming from a guy who hated almost every other hadoop book he read. There are a couple things that these authors do different from other hadoop authors:

1. They thoroughly explain the difference between all the hadoop versions, and what things are compatible/incompatible with one another. It covers YARN in detail.
2. They explain how to do things using both the old and the new hadoop APIs. This is so important because a lot of code has already been developed for the old API, and people are likely to encounter that at work.
3. They include import statements in their code samples, I can't tell you how many times I read other documentation that omitted the import statements and it made things so confusing for me. This is especially important with hadoop, because there are a lot of classes in their APIs with the same names but in different packages.
4. They have a hadoop administration chapter, which is a big deal to me because I have struggled desperately to make hadoop run in the past. It is not easy by any means. They cover multiple ways to get hadoop running: using cloudera's VM, using amazon's cloud, and setting things up yourself. They explain the config files and what all of their settings do too.

I would recommend reading this book BEFORE you read "Hadoop: The Definitive Guide" because this will get you up to speed faster. Since the definitive guide gives you a lot of fine details, it is not a good starter book.

A practical guide on Hadoop 2.0

As another reviewer mentioned, this is an excellent first book for Hadoop. It covers Hadoop 2.0 in great detail while still staying within familiar ground for most readers since it uses SQL to explain Hadoop concepts. The code examples are consistent and help illustrate the points. The chapters on Hadoop administration focus on the practical aspects you are likely to use at work.

One area where the book shines is in its treatment of Large Table Joins. Secondary Sort is an important and extremely practical concept which is usually only mentioned in passing in other books. But this book devotes almost an entire chapter to it and demonstrates its use for Large Table Joins. The authors have gone deep into the Hadoop source code and described the underlying Hadoop framework where appropriate.

The treatment of Hadoop libraries like HBase and Pig is also unique. Instead of being focused on just the usage of these libraries the focus is on explaining the underlying concepts and the describing how these libraries work internally as well as where their use is appropriate.

The book leave you with a sense of not just how Hadoop should be used but also how Hadoop works on the inside. A great effort from the authors.

Hadoop Defined, Inspected, and Explained

This was my first book about Hadoop and I found the explanations and techniques to be well written. The authors are experts in the field as they point out many gotchas along the way. Knowing some Java is a prerequisite for this book as there are a lot of code examples.

Most of the first half of the book covers Hadoop directly including how to configure Hadoop, how to do MapReduce, and other common techniques. The later part of the book looks a lot at tools that interact with Hadoop such as Pig, Hive, HCatalog, HBase, Hama, Spark and some others.

The main example used in this book is word count spread across many documents. This example worked well as it is was easy to understand, and it was the same topic that the original MapReduce was based on. Over the course of the book the authors allow the example to get more and more complex, while providing clear explanations.

I found the flow and the writing of the book to be excellent. At the beginning there are clear high level explanations of different Big Data tools. There is no fluff at all, the book is purely technical in this sense.

Masterpiece

I won a copy of this book from the Goodreads group Erotica anniversary event.

The story is about a well known rich and sophisticated artist finding his true match. The twist is the erotic nature of his sexual desires and the secret society he belong within. The readers are given a taste of several other characters within the secret society, and there is a character for all types of erotic play.

I am so happy I was given the opportunity to read this book. The characters are very well developed and the storyline is interesting. The length of the book was ideal and well worth the authors charge for anyone interested in purchasing.

Julianne can’t believe she won the apprenticeship with Nicolai. Her life has been so restricted by her father that she has a difficult time when she realizes that Nicolai could mean so much more to her than just being her teacher. What happens when she realizes she can have everything she wants after Nicolai finally acknowledges he wants her as his is wondrous.

Masterpiece is the first book in the Masters of the Order series. For readers that love a good BDSM story, this is one for the shelves. It was wonderful to watch Julianne blossom as she discovered her own sexuality, as well as being what is known as a natural submissive. Nicolai struggled to balance his own dark desires as he discovered what Julianne can handle.

The Order is a group of men and women that are in the extreme upper echelon of society in France. There is a code of honor that they follow including helping each other when one falls in love and finds ‘their one’. Things are a little more complicated with Julianne since before she was born, her mother had been the love of the Order’s leader’s life. As friends help Nicolai protect Julianne, Xavier is plotting.

This story has so many twists and turns that kept my interest. I did not want to put this book down. Readers should be aware that this book is intense. The relationship that Nicolai and Julianne have is explosive especially when cousins, best friends and mentors sometimes are invited to participate. I liked that this story stressed communication and expressing yourself when limits are reached. Even though safe words were discussed, they weren’t used. The story also stressed that the difference between abuse and consensual activities.

Readers should be aware that this book was previously released by another publisher, but it has been revised and re-edited according to Loose Id. I have to say that after reading this book, that Jillian Verne has been added to my must read authors of BDSM based on this story. I am looking forward to reading more in the Masters of the Order. Masterpiece is a book that should be on every BDSM lover’s bookshelf.

The Order is an interesting group

I received a copy of this in exchange for an honest review through Wicked Reads.

This was the first book of this genre to give me a "book hangover" in a long time, and for that I commend the author. I had a hard time starting another book because I was still thinking about this one. I can't tell if I feel in love with the book, or the idea in the book, A.k.a The Order.
I was instantly drawn to this book when I saw that it had references to art, BDSM, and an elite group. All things that sounded intriguing. I was not disappointed. The Order is a group of elite people members who all belong to a BDSM filled secret society, andI found it interesting. I still want to know more about it and every single one of it's members.
The characters in this book were very fun and interesting to read about. They were nicely developed, and I definitely wanted to learn more about them and hope to in future books. Julianne was my favorite part of the book and there definitely was emotional depth linked to her. Nicolai didn't seem nearly as developed, but was still intriguing. Their romance was nice, and at moments quite sexy.
I really felt like this was a long book, and yet, I felt like it wasn't all there like I would have wanted it to be. I'm hoping future books resolve this, but overall I did like this book and will be looking to the next in the series.

I have always loved a good paranormal love story between two men

I have always loved a good paranormal love story between two men, but when one of them can become pregnant I am hooked. It is one of my top favorite kinks in stories. Now I must admit that when two paranormal’s get together it is a given that they know, but for a human to except it so easy as this one showed it is a little bit strange.

Cole loved Brody even after Brody ended their relationship. Now he was going to end up spending his Christmas alone, because flights were being cancelled. He had not expected Brody to be at the airport. Although he should have considering Brody was a pilot.

Brody left Cole because his bear wanted to mate with him. To mate with him, meant that Cole would become pregnant. However it would seem that he wants Cole just as much as his bear.

It is a fun story that is very steamy. I loved the whole Christmas way about it. To me it makes Christmas more magical when you are with the one you love. I wished that it would have given us a bit more though. I want to know all about the pregnancy and what the sex of the baby was. It would have been the best ending to the story. I had so much fun with this and would definitely like to see more by this author.

Fairly good exploration of MongoDB

Fairly good exploration of MongoDB. Rocha Franca exposes both the low level (designing schema, creating databases and collections, queries) and higher level (indexing, node replication, and sharding) capabilities of Mongo from the perspective of someone who understands Mongo in the context of the DBMS market place. The title "MongoDB Data Modeling" is a little bit misleading, though, as this is a more well-rounded approach to MongoDB as a whole rather than specifically focusing on data modeling. In fact, there is a much more in-depth discussion on the topic of data modeling in Mongo's official documentation. The book does culminate in a useful "capstone" chapter that incorporates many of the ideas introduced earlier, showing the decision making process from deciding on the schema of a particular collection, implementing the queries in a simple Node.js application, and examining the results in the stored data.

Complaints:

-There is a brief foray into using the Nginx platform (for half a chapter or so), which is quickly abandoned for Node.js. I found this a bit confusing and question its purpose.

-Even for such a new book, some of the examples of command results are seemingly already out-of-date. Particularly, the section where the author has you run "explain()" functions on your queries. The function still operates as you would expect and returns more-or-less the same data as shown in the book, however the labeling of said data and the format/structure of the result are almost completely different which means you will have to do some decoding/mapping to figure out the correspondence. Also, the way he formats the "explain()" function, by chaining it before "find()" did not work for me, I always had to take "explain()" out and append it to be after "find()" to get it to run.

-Like most of Packt's books, several awkwardly constructed sentences, inexplicably informal word choice (why is the word "nowadays" so prevalent in Packt's non-native speakers' books?), and typos that should have been caught by the reviewers and editors. I don't blame this on Rocha Franca (or the other Packt authors), in fact, I'm often amazed at how well non-native English speakers can communicate their ideas.

The right book to get introduced to MongoDB general concepts

Although the book is divided in 8 chapters conceptually it is divided into two parts one generic that covers general concepts, that is Part I and Part II that covers examples of using MongoDB:

Part I:

Chapter1 Introducing Data Modeling it is just an introductory chapter. It gives a brief explanation of what is the MongoDB document database and NoSQL databases, a brief overview of the ANSI/SPARC architecture and so on. Although some authors state that some NoSQL databases are schemaless it is not true for MongoDB given that it is used for representing semi-structured and structured data.

Chapter 2 Data Modeling with MongoDB is the core chapter for a MongoDB beginner that truly fulfils the book's title. The chapter starts with a brief introduction to JSON and BSON and how MongoDB uses JSON for document notation and BSON to serialize documents. After this it is explained how flexible is MongoDB to define different document structures for the same document represented, how MongoDB uses the default _id field to define the document object id and how we can define sequence fields to assign a value although it is recommended for scalability purposes to use MongoDB default object id generation. Common document patterns are introduced for both embedded and referenced documents depending on the type of document relationship explaining when to embed or to use references.

Chapter 3 Querying Documents is at the MongoDB beginner's level. It starts telling us how to specify queries with the collection's find operation, query criteria and query field projection parameters similar as done in SQL queries that return cursors for selected documents. Results will be presented as documents in JSON format. An introduction to comparison operators such as $gte, $lte and so on is presented. Also logical operators such as $and, $or, $not are presented with some examples. A small section on element operators is presented later. The $exists operator tests if a given field is defined in a document. What follows next is an example of a $regex query and array operators. This was just an introduction to MongoDB query operators because MongoDB includes a very rich set. An introduction to write operations such as insert, update and remove is presented next. Also a good explanation of write concerns or the levels of guaranteeing a successful write operations is included. Write concerns are classified into unacknowledged, the default acknowledged, journaled and replica acknowledged.

Chapter 4 Indexing. This chapter for the RDBMS fellows is at the beginners level. MongoDB internal data structure for indexes uses a B-tree data structure. With the createIndex method we can create either indexes ordered ascendently or descendently. Also we can create single field indexes, multiple field indexes, multikey indexes that index arrays and finally text indexes that index string or arrays of string fields. Text indexes are more sophisticated given that string tokenization, word stemming and stop word removal is produced. The chapter ends up with TTL indexes based upon date fields, unique and sparse indexes. Sparse indexes are also special given that the index will not contain documents that do not have the indexed field.

Chapter 5 Optimizing Queries. This chapter is devoted to DBAs and it delves into MongoDB query optimizer's query plans which are explained by the cursor's explain method. Three types of parameters for the explain method namely queryPlanner, executionStats and allPlansExecution provide different levels of details. By using the explain method you would be surprised to find out that a declared index is not being used and that instead an entire collection scan is being produced and so on. What follows next is an explanation of how to cover queries by projecting only the fields that are part of an index, retrieving directly values from the index. In MongoDB we can force the query optimizer to generate a query plan that uses a given index with the hint method. The chapter ends up with an explanation of read preferences for replica sets. Although it is not specified where does MongoDB stand in the CAP theorem one can imagine it according to read preference options.

Chapter 6 Managing the Data. In this chapter it is explained how we can use tag sets to define read preferences and custom write concerns in replica sets. Not only we can use tag sets to declare configurations to separate MongoDB applications by application operation type but we can also define configurations to declare MongoDB applications separated geographically. What follows next is the explanation of capped collections and when to use them. Capped collections are fixed size collections with high read and write throughput in natural order, that is how they are stored on disk, without requiring the overhead of indexes. This chapter ends up by showing how to use TTL indexes to remove data after a given set of time and the shortcomings of using them.

Chapter 7 Scaling: section Scaling MongoDB with sharding. MongoDB scales horizontally with the sharding technique by partitioning data and distributing it among many servers. There is a compromise between availability and consistency but the main issue about sharding is to obtain high throughput operation. MongoDB offers mainly range-based and hash-based sharding with respect to the shard key. In the choosing the shard key subsection an example of range-based sharding and shard key shortcomings is presented. Choosing the right shard key is critical to database performance. Generally speaking, shard keys must be composed of fields with high cardinality enabling data chunks to be highly distributed suited for write operations. In the case of read operations, performance throughput will be better when retrieving data from a single shard.

Part II

Chapter 7 Scaling: section Scaling a social inbox schema design and Chapter 8 Logging and Real-time Analytics with MongoDB contain examples of using sharding and shard keys for a distributed social inbox and how to use MongoDB to process custom log files generated by an Nginx web server respectively.

Summary:

The first 6 chapters and the first part of chapter 7 covers general MongoDB concepts and it is intended for beginners and intermediate readers. The second part of chapter 7 and chapter 8 are devoted to intermediate and advanced readers. Readers of this second part must set up the right environment to grasp the concepts being covered.

Fine way to start one's adventure with MongoDB

Rocha Franca's MongoDB Data Modeling is a fine way to start one's adventure with MongoDB. Before diving into technical details author takes time to introduce reader to brief history of NoSQL databases and basic concepts of architecture. From there reader smoothly continues to MongoDB's way of storing data, gets feet wet with JSON (and BSON) format and finally finds what the title promised - how the data can be modeled and tips when to use each pattern. Data modelling chapter is followed by practical introduction to MongoDB with read and write operations and indexing, everything backed by easy to understand examples. Later reader enters more advanced topics like query optimization, gets acquainted with query plans and optimizer to finally take a look at how Mongo handles replications, write concerns and finally scaling with sharding using real life example. The book finishes with a good chapter summarizing everything reader has learnt so far - author gives us concrete problem to solve and leads our way in finding not only good, but better solution.

Why not 5 stars? I believe that aggregation pipeline deserved at least its own chapter highlighting concepts and possibilities. Also somehow I expected more data modeling case studies than MongoDB basics. Overally we are given a good book, just bit below my maybe too high expectations.

The Unsurpassed graphic novel of a near future America

"Give Me Liberty" tells the story of young Martha Washington, a precocious african-american girl growing up inside of the horror of public housing - "The Green" (a hideous development of the "Carbrini Green" projects of Chicago). At the dawn of a new century, a fascist president helms an America that features everything evil we can expect of the "New World Order" - including domination by corporations and an insurmountable gap between rich and poor. Abolishing term-limits (with each succesiive inauguaration, the crowds of supproters seems to be inversely proportional to the armed guards) the President spends most of his time reminding us how happy we should be thanks to him. At first trapped in Cabrini, Martha's savage misfortunes provide her an odd escape - first institutionalization, then (because it will clean her record) enlistment with PAX, a sort of corporate backed citizen's army. As a soldier on every one of America's frontlines, Martha witnesses how America's new empire is born, even as its dying. The enemies of course are not the Russians, but competing corporations (mostly theme parks and fast-food companies). In case you haven't caught on, "Give Me Liberty" is all about an advanced American state slowly disintegrating under its own weight. The country is soon gripped in civil wars - rather than a single conflict, the fighting is disorganized, along state, muncipal and corporate lines, and further complicated by various non-aligned factions, like the amazon women of the "First Sex Confederacy" and tribes of Native Americans armed with their own missiles. Even the left-wing administration that (briefly) suceeds Rexall is overwhelmed by the evil that is the new century.
While the story of America is compelling, "Give Me Liberty" actually suceeds because it never abandons Martha. Rather than some empty-headed figure upon whom "Give Me" can stamp its story, Martha is strong-willed, convincingly intelligent and surprisingly sympathetic. We never pity Martha nor can we condemn her for the ends she must take (which are violent - there's a fair amount of gore in the story). The future landscape of America is compelling, yet the story appears heavy-handed in some spots (the orbiting laser cannons are overtly phallic; the fst-food wars are fought by robots styled after the avatars of many Fat-Boy restaurants; genetic engineering creates an army of hyper-intelligent mutants used as living computers - like the "Pre-Cogs" of "Minority Report"; other clones include an army of beautiful but super-strong blondes who manage to escape the billionaire who bred them; then there's a mysterious surgeon general who seems patterned on Darth Vader - always masked, speaking in short sentences and never leaving any doubt of his homicidal mania). Still, the story can rely on our being continually focused on Martha. In that respect, "Give Me Liberty" does not dissappoint.

Blunt but Effective

If there's one thing noone will ever accuse Frank Miller of it's subtlety. While the satire has all of the nuanced grace of a sledge hammer to the face this is still a surprisingly powerful and always entertaining piece. It manages to balance the over the top aspects with genuine emotion thanks to an amazingly strong central character with Martha Washington. This blew my mind when I read it in my early teens, and while I recognize now it's not a very sophisticated piece it still stands strong.

Masterpiece

This book is a Science fiction graphic novel by Frank Miller (batman:DK; sin city) with art by Dave Gibbons (watchmen).It takes place in the future. Martha is the main character. GIVE ME LIBERTY is the first graphic novel in a trilogy which can now be found at barnes and noble in one large volume. This series is for those that enjoy a good action packed political satire.
