Best reference on my shelf

I have used this book with students since my very first days of teaching in the late seventies. Any time a project was proposed involving human-powered motion the book came off the shelf and into the hands of the curious and ambitious group. From recumbents to cargo bikes to bicycle water pumps and so much more. This book is a gem. The best reference on my shelf.

BS3 gave me a woody..

I have BS2, but in June 2005 ordered BS3 think it is great. Lots of recent information, re-organized, and overall was an improvement over the previous 2 editions. I still find it useful to have an older edition around (e.g. BS2) to see how things have changed and new information on aerodynamics, nutrition, etc. have been discovered in the last 10 or so years.
CAVEATS: --I was disappointed that aerodynamic research done with Lance and Steve Hed etc. were not included. --For practical advice on training, nutrition, aerodynamics advantage of certains pieces of gear, seat height, etc., I recommend ED Burke's books, such as 'Serious Cycling', 'High Tech Cycling', etc. --For specific training plans I recommend Chris Carmichael's books. --For repairs, I recommend the books from Park Tools, and Barnett. --A collection of Gene Sloan's repair books not only gives great advice, but also lets you see how various components have evolved over the last 20+ years.
Still, an entertaining book for those of use who wonder about the affects of bearing friction, mechanical loads, etc. and the affect it may have on our riding.

About the Author
John Sammons is an Associate Professor and Director of the undergraduate program in Digital Forensics and Information Assurance at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. John teaches digital forensics, electronic discovery, information security and technology in the School of Forensic and Criminal Justices Sciences. He's also adjunct faculty with the Marshall University graduate forensic science program where he teaches the advanced digital forensics course. John, a former police officer, is also an Investigator with the Cabell County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and a member of the West Virginia Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. He is a Member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences, the High Technology Crime Investigation Association, and Infragard.
John is the founder and President of the Appalachian Institute of Digital Evidence. AIDE is a non-profit organization that provides research and training for digital evidence professionals including attorneys, judges, law enforcement and information security practitioners in the private sector. He is the author of best-selling book, The Basics of Digital Forensics published by Syngress.

Wish I had this when I was starting out

Just like the title says, this book is an overview of the basics of digital forensics. And as a primer, it does a great job of introducing not only the technical basics, but also some of the (just as important!) non-technical basics that entrants to the field should be aware of. Also, I love that this is not just Computer Forensics, but Digital Forensics. Networks and mobile devices are becoming a bigger part of what a typical digital forensic analyst encounters these days and they need some love too - and get it in Chapters 9 and 10.

Like the title to my review says, I wish that this book had been around when I started in the field. The information is laid out in a easy to understand manner, and there is a good measure of humor thrown in to keep things fun. My favorite line so far? "A digital forensic report written in plain English is both much appreciated and much more effective (can I get an 'Amen' from the lawyers out there?)." Well, I'm not a lawyer, but you got at least one "amen" here.

Bearing in mind that this book is geared toward newer entrants, I would love to see additional books that take the same approach and delve even deeper. All in all, I highly recommend this for those new or newer to the field. Great stuff!

A Solid Introduction

Overall this is a very quick and easy foray into digital forensics. Don't get this if you're expecting a technical study resource or even a theoretical one. It reads much like an in-depth news article or a professor giving a lecture. The technical and theoretical work is going to have be done on your own time and from a different source. But, as an overview of the subject and a motivator for the interested computer forensics professional, I think this is a solid book.

As far as delivering exactly what it promises, The Basics of Digital Forensics: The Primer for Getting Started in Digital Forensics deserves a 5 star. But, after finishing the book I'm left with a somewhat unsatisfied feeling as if much of the time spent reading the book was an opportunity cost where I would've learned more had the material been slightly more advanced. A partial credit to the readability of the book is that a lot of what's covered feels like common sense or inconsequential to learning.

I would've liked to have seen slightly more technical information in the book at a basic level, so as to give me a quality reason to browse through the book a second and third time and make sure I'd understood the general concepts. Overall it's a solid addition to my collection and probably something I'd recommend to an interested high school student or a college freshman deciding if they should take a course on the subject.

Great primer!

I unfairly, and looking back, embarrassingly, received this book by answering an audience question to which the answer was my name during an AIDE conference in 2012 at Marshall University.
I then said, "hey, give it someone else", but the giver insisted I keep it, to my dismay. But, hey, now I get to review it :)

This is a very clear and well written introduction to the field of digital forensics. Take note of the book's subtitle
which is nothing less than accurate; It's a primer, and a very good one at that, but nothing more.

Pros:
1.) Presented in an easy to read and clear format
2.) Short, not overwhelming, as a primer ought to be (IMO)
3.) Brief discussions of relevant court cases, crimes, and legal rulings
4.) Covered the hierarchy of digital forensic organizations along with leading institutions and standards
5.) Focus on procedure and practice with an overview of each technology domain e.g. desktop computer, cellular, gps
6.) A chapter devoted to legal aspects and problems in the field

Notes & Misc:
1.) As I would expect, Windows is the only major workstation OS touched upon
2.) This book does not focus on specific tools and applicability but, rather, digital forensics as a whole
3.) I was recently at a UofL/FBI partnered conference at the University of Louisville where agents mentioned the presence of a RCFL on campus.
Thanks to the book I now know a little background on this i.e. FBI started the program and there are 16 facilities in the U.S. (pg. 30)
4.) I learned that there are Faraday bags for cellular and mobile devices (pg. 48)
5.) Most technical books are riddled with errors and typography problems. I was surprised to see that I didn't catch anything (Though, I read it in a car on the way to a vacation spot).
6.) on page 40. "Examples include DNA, latent prints, hair, and fibers.." Since we use hair because it _contains_ DNA the sentence /seems/ tautological but I don't believe it is.

I give it 5 stars because the book lives up to its purpose by being brief in contents but holistic in approach i.e. a perfect primer.

Contains 49 Songs

I've always liked Schirmer music editions because their layout is always nice and easy to read. However, one reviewer mentioned that this volume is not the absolute complete collection of Songs Without Words. So I compared it with Complete Songs without Words for Piano (Dover Music for Piano) and Schirmer in fact has 49 songs. Dover ("Complete") only has 48. The 49th song from Schirmer's is the Venetian Boat Song published posthumously. I chose this book over the Dover edition because apart from the notes being bigger, the editor added some helpful fingerings here and there as well as pedal marks. I am not concert pianist caliber so I could definitely benefit from a little editorializing. The Dover book was purely notes from start to finish and contains more music in a page so it's 40 pages less than Schirmers. For my needs and skill level, this book is just perfect.

Over-edited.

I always like the layout and look of the Schirmer editions, but I ended up returning this one in favor of an urtext edition because it was so heavily edited. It seemed that nearly every measure had some editorital addition, and while I don't mind a little bit of commentary to clear up a phrasing or dynamic issue, this was really over the top.

Standard collection of the fine Songs Without Words in a sturdy, reasonably-priced volume

Schirmer collections offer excellent, reasonably-priced, editions of classical music and this selection of Mendelssohn's fine Lieder Ohne Woerter includes many of the most popular pieces written for the piano. Many are playable by intermediate pianists, with the rest being more advanced, but all are wonderful. I recommend this book to all pianists.

I think this book is great for someone just starting out in the business world

I think this book is great for someone just starting out in the business world. It has a lot of great information for the person just out of college or just starting in the workforce. Now that I am older and have been working for a while, I found a lot of the information just common sense. This book has four different parts. Part One talks about how to dress, make sure you are on time for the interview and the interview itself. The author gives a lot of examples from his own personal experience which, to me, makes the book a lot more interesting. Part Two is Office Culture and talks about social media, small talk and just general office behavior. He also gives some multiple choice questions asking how you would deal with a certain situation. Part Three is about Rising to the Top and asking for a raise, being a leader, and how to take criticism. He explains how to take criticism, which most of us can't do without getting defensive, but he suggests to just listen. The way he uses examples helps understand what he is talking about and the use of the multiple choice questions really engages the reader. The last part is called Tricky Stuff. Here he talks about office romance, which is funny since I met my husband at work and we have been married 29 years now. The difficulties with co-workers, traveling for work and even work parties. I would highly recommend this book for the college student ready to hit the "real world." I received this product for free in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.

There is four parts to this book, The Best You, Office Culture, Rising to the Top, and The Tricky Stuff.
Part One: touches on dress, being on time, body language, how to introduce yourself, and the dreaded interview.
Part Two: then goes into small talk, being sensitive towards other, writing and sending emails, talking on the phone, using your cell, social media, how to participate in meetings, and as a team member.
Part Three: Networking, giving and getting criticism, meetings as leader, teams as leader, asking for a raise, interviewing candidates, interacting with other companies, and quitting.
Part Four: work parties, friendships, gifts, workplace romances, difficult colleagues, interpersonal conflicts, disputes with management, traveling for work, cultural sensitives.
Then you have the Appendix: Office jargon (what it really means)
A lot of this is just common sense, but for anyone who has worked in the public, knows there is a short coming of common sense. I would recommend this book to anyone, going into the workforce or someone who is thinking about changing jobs whether it is in the same field or doing something totally different. A great guide to being appropriate!

The Simple Art of Business Etiquette by Jeffrey L. Seglin is a MUST READ!

In business and in life, if you don't present yourself respectful and well mannered, no matter how good your pitch is or how smart you are, people will just disregard you. The author teaches us that appropriateness is the key to success. Being mindful of what you post on social media, turning your cell phone off when someone else is talking, helping others as you would want others to help you are all things to keep in mind.

This book is filled with common etiquette rules that we all know but need to be mindful of. It features real life stories and scenarios guiding us to proper business manners. To succeed professionally is to succeed socially.

All in all, this book is filled with tidbits to help us rise to the top by playing nice! Learn the words, 'Be aware!', as you will need to be fully aware of how you are perceived and how you carry yourself.

I recommend this book to anyone starting out in business or even College. What you do today, can influence what you do tomorrow.

really good in terms of overall theory

I liked this author's Acoustic Guitar Styles book so much, I had to get this one. I'm about 1/3 of the way through, and so far its very good. He's really thorough, and sometimes it moves a little slow. I find I need to move through it pretty quickly because I want to get to some exciting stuff. But I appreciate the clear writing and explanations of the theory behind the musical ideas.

It's definitely worth getting - but it will take some discipline to go through it. He doesn't just throw Blues riffs and turn arounds at you - as in many other blues books. He really is about helping the reader completely learn the styles and structure - and how to build on it. He's definitely helping me improve.

The book pursues a worthy idea: learn acoustic blues with a finger-picking style of play. Curiously, the instructional CD was blank. Amazon replaced it and the replacement was blank as well. First time I've seen this sort of thing. I hope Amazon notifies the publisher.

great book; CD in wrong format

I had problems with the CD, until I put it in my computer. It turns out that all the files are in .aif format, which my computer will play, but my cd player doesn't recognize.

I thought the book was great. I felt that the way it progressed from one lesson/track to the next was really helpful.

Some things you can learn from this book:
- Basic blues progressions, in several keys
- Various chord voicings (eg different ways of playing A7, E7, in multiple positions and within same position)
- intro to movable chord shapes.
- Various rhythmic patterns

This books is a great way to break away from the typically boring material contained in most beginner guitar books. This would be a good "second book" (or third...) for someone learning guitar. By playing music you like, I think you'll advance your skills more quickly.
