Maybe Rethink Heading North During A Zombie Apocalypse

When I think of zombie literature, I think of outbreaks described in the States, the UK and, on occasion, Australia. Canada has simply been that place that American survivors try to flee to in the stories. While I am no stranger to Canadian authors, I've never given much thought to apocalyptic outbreaks scenarios up North, which is a poor reflection on my imagination, especially considering that I live "next door" in Michigan. And - wow - have I been missing out on some great zombie stories!

The reason I picked up this anthology is because I had heard that one of my favorite Canadian authors, Chantal Boudreau, had written another zombie story (she's one of my favorite YA authors as well). I've also been looking for something a little less mainstream, and, well, original. I don't know what impressed me more: the diversity of the stories in this collection, or the strong cultural themes within. And, for that, all of the authors should be commended.

Of course, when you've read as much zombie-lit as I have over the years, you begin to develop a palette for certain flavors of undead horror. So, some of the stories appealed to me more than others. There are, I think, 20 stories in this anthology (I may have miscounted), so, rather than review each one, I am going to highlight my personal favorites:

THE HERD by TYLER KEEVIL was the first story, and a great way to begin this undead buffet of gore and drama. The Herd reminded me of the movie Ravenous, but with zombies.

KEZZIE OF BABYLON by JAMIE MASON has a zombie horse. Enough said.

THOSE BENEATH THE BOG by JACQUES L. CONDOR was the most frightening story in the anthology, as far as I'm concerned. I would really love to see more horror from this author in the future.

GROUND ZERO: SAINTE-ANNE-DE-BELLEVUE by CLAUDE LALUMIERE had me hooked with the first paragraph, and dragged me down a path of unexpected terror.

DEAD DRIFT by CHANTAL BOUDREAU is sure to please her fans. I loved the source of the zombie virus, and I wish that she would turn this story into a full-length novel.

HALF GHOST by LINDA DeMEULEMEESTER was the very last story in the anthology, and a great way to wrap it all up. The creepy-factor was very high in this undead tale, but it left me wanting more. Prequel? Sequel? In any case, it left me hungry for more (pun ABSOLUTELY intended).

I have learned my lesson. From now on, I will make sure to include Canadian zombie lit in my reading list, and I recommend Dead North to my fellow zombiephiles, regardless of which country you live in.

A Helpful Calculus Review Book

I used this book as a way to help me to review Calculus since there have been a number of years between the time when I took Calculus and now.

The sheer number of solved problems is a strong point in and of itself. For me, though, the real strength of this book is it's presentation of topics that I don't find often see in other calculus texts. Specifically, I saw techniques of differentiation and integration that I have never seen in introductory Calculus texts before - and some of these techniques are critical for being able to evaluate certain types of derivatives/integrals.

Like almost any "Outline Series" book, you don't get as much background exposition of the subject matter as you would in a standard text. However, this is to be expected from this type of book, and it doesn't detract from the material.

I downloaded the sample to my Kindle Paperwhite. The pictures presented in the book are TERRIBLY small! There is no way I am buying this in eBook format. Why on earth would you sell people a product that doesn't work? You'll need magnifying glasses to properly look at the MANY tiny equations.

About the Author

Hua He, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in Biostatistics at the Department of Epidemiology at Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Dr. He received her Ph.D in Statistics in 2007 from the Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the University of Rochester, where she then worked as a faculty member until she moved to Tulane University in 2015. Dr. He has been focusing on methodological and collaborative research with investigators in the areas of behavioral and social sciences both within and outside of academic institutes. She is a highly experienced biostatistician with expertise in longitudinal data analysis, structural equation models, potential outcome based causal inference, distribution-free models, ROC analysis and their applications to observational studies, and randomized controlled trials across a range of disciplines, especially in the behavioral and social sciences. She has published a series of publications in peer-reviewed journals and has contributed several chapters to books. She also co-authored a graduate-level textbook, Applied Categorical and Count Data Analysis (Chapman & Hall/CRC). She is the recipient of an R01 study entitled “Moving beyond description: statistical and causal inference for social media data” and has served as a co-investigator for multiple studies funded by NIH, NIMH, NHLBI, etc.

Pan Wu, Ph.D., is a senior research biostatistician in the Value Institute at the Christiana Care Health System and a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, the Sidney Kimmel Medical School at the Thomas Jefferson University. His research focuses on causal inference, mediation analysis, longitudinal data analysis with missing data, survival analysis, medical diagnosis, and high-dimensional variable selection and their applications in psychosocial, biomedical, and epidemiological studies. Dr. Wu has collaborated with a wide range of investigators on multiple research projects funded by NIH, NIMH, NHLBI, and AHRQ including mental health, cardiovascular disease, women’s health, and health optimization. He has published a series of important publications in development of new methodology in causal inference and applications in public health. One of the works on estimation of causal treatment effect for non-parametric statistics was published as a feature article in Statistics in Medicine in 2014. Dr. Wu got his Ph.D. in Statistics from the department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the University of Rochester in 2013. 

Ding-Geng Chen, Ph.D., is an elected Fellow of American Statistical Association for his leadership and influential contributions in biopharmaceutical statistics research; for leadership and prominent research contributions in public health; for major contributions to biostatistical methodology; for excellence in teaching and mentoring; and for prodigious and significant service to the statistical profession. He is currently the Wallace Kuralt distinguished professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a professor at the University of Rochester and the Karl E. Peace endowed eminent scholar chair in biostatistics at Georgia Southern University. He is also a senior statistics consultant for biopharmaceuticals and government agencies with extensive expertise in clinical trial biostatistics and public health statistics. Professor Chen has more than 100 referred professional publications and has co-authored and co-edited seven books on clinical trial methodology, meta-analysis, and public health applications. He has been invited nationally and internationally to give speeches on his research.

An interesting little book about drilling a RR tunnel.

This book describes the challenges faced by the people trying to drill a tunnel through a mountain in the Berkshires during the 1800's. This project was one of the first to use TNT, back when it was very unstable. Hundreds of men lost their lives over the course of several years and several attempts to build the Hoosac Tunnel.

I won an ARC of Full Circle directly from the author. First let me say I've been hooked on this series since the beginning. That being said Full Circle was my favorite. I loved being able to see how Hannah and Garrett grew as a couple once they were together full time. It was also great being able to see how they dealt with less than ideal situations (wasn't just a oh everything is perfect now story line). I read this book in one night then went back and reread the entire series together. Would highly recommend this book and the entire series! Can't wait to see Jared grovel this fall!

Author Laramie Briscoe wraps up the Rockin’ Country saga of Reaper (Garrett) and Harmony (Hannah) in Full Circle. We’ve seen these two characters meet, have a whirlwind courtship, fall in love, marry, and what comes after marriage? Yes, life is really changing for these two and with is comes fears, tears, and a whole lot of love.

I have really loved watching these two not only grow up as individuals but watching their relationship mature as these books have gone along. It hasn’t been easy, their careers and their pasts put them in the public eye and as much as they try to control the media machine sometimes they just can’t. I do love that their communication skills have gotten better as time has gone on, that the love between them has grown, and their trust in each other is absolute.

Touring is always interesting for a band and when Hannah accompanies Black Friday on their tour while taking time off from her own career she gets to know Garrett’s band mates a whole lot better. I love how she made time to do things with each of them and how they were there to protect her and keep her safe along with Garrett. I love how accepting they were of her into their group and how she made sure to include them especially in a decision that would affect them all.

We were treated to glimpses of the struggle Shel has in her relationship with Jared and a teeny bit into Stacey’s (Garrett’s sister) relationship with his band mate Brad and thankfully we’ll see more in books to come. There were a few harrowing moments in this book; both took their toll on Garrett and Hannah but might also impact the future of the band.

I really enjoyed the intimate scenes between Garrett and Hannah as it shows how comfortable they’ve become with one another, how much they trust each other and more than that that their love is stronger than ever.

While this is the “last chapter” in Garrett and Hannah’s story, I’m sure we’ll see snippets of them in the books to come and that makes me happy as I can’t wait to see how they deal with recording, touring, and their new bundle of joy!

Rocking and rolling with a new life...romantic and sweet

I was lucky enough to receive a free copy of this book before release day to review.
This entry in the Harmony/Reaper saga starts with a bonus prologue that takes place as they spend their first Christmas together as a married couple. It was sweet and as they exchanged their gifts, it gave us just more of a glimpse into their rock/country marriage and just how devoted they really are to each other.
This book is primarily about their desire to start a family and being on the road together, learning more and more about how each other "works" and cementing their relationship before they take the plunge at parenthood. Also along for this ride we get more about Shell and Jared and their rocky road to happiness which will be severely tested as Jared flip flops from being in love with Shell to letting outside forces put a huge wedge between them and making for a dangerous outcome.
The road to being a family won't be easy for Harmony either, as she deals with some heavy health issues that cause the press to go crazy and wonder if she has relapsed. It is a touch and go situation for these two young lovers as real life gets in the way of the fantasy of being on tour and starting a family at the same time, but you just know if anyone can overcome the obstacles..it is these two.
This was a very different series for Laramie Briscoe and nothing like her biker books (which I am a huge fan of) although she does try to add more spice into Harmony and Reaper's sex life by introducing some new "play" that they have not done before but that might be more fitting for the rockstar lifestyle that Reaper is used to. It was romantic and tender enough to appeal to readers of "light" romance novels but with a little bit of an edge to appeal to those who like a grittier story.
Coming up next will be Shell and Jared's book because their story ends with a bit of a shock and is left hanging. Stay tuned!

Affordable Rental

This is the Literature for Composition: An Introduction to Literature (10th Edition). I used this book for my English Composition Class the second part. I looked around online for the cheapest alternative to rent a book for this class. I found the cheapest on Amazon. I saved about $20 more just by renting with amazon. For those complaining of the condition of the book I don't think it's fair this is a USED RENTAL it's not going to be brand new or spiffy as long as it gets the job done and does not impede you from passing class and is not like falling apart at the seams there should be no problem. The book came in fair condition. I keep in mind that this book has probably been used and flipped through by countless other students as well. In terms of content it's an English book the pieces of Literature that the authors chose were mostly either weird, or depressing and trust me I appreciate literature.

About the Author
Wescott is Professor of Spanish at the SUNY College in Fredonia. He received his PhD from Brown University.

Before his death in 1996, Paul Shepardwas Avery Professor of Human Ecology and Natural Philosophy at Pitzer College and the Claremont Graduate School. Among his books are The Others: How Animals Make Us Human (Island Press/ Shearwater Books, 1995) and Encounters with Nature, (Island Press/Shearwater Books, 1999).


The late Datus Proper was the author of the path-breaking What the Trout Said, one of the most interesting and challenging books on fly-pattern design. He was an American Foreign Service Officer.

A Philosophy of the Hunt

This is an excellent book which details the Ortega y. Gasset philosophy of hunting. It is surprising how little reader interest there is in the book. I would consider it a must read for those who still hunt.

Ortega y. Gasset bases his thinking on a combination of anthropology, history and natural sciences. The basic idea is that hunting is an ancient occupation of man, it is part of the definition of man's place in nature and it is ingrained into the genetic code of all of us.

In this way, Ortega y. Gasset reveals that by hunting, people fulfill their biological imperatives, realize their ability to transcend time and find their primitive being which predates recorded history.

The work is primarily a philosophical justification of hunting. I believe Ortega y. Gasset proves his point convincingly. However, that hardly matters because his analysis certainly evokes the right question which is, "Why do we hunt?"

Meditations on Hunting

This is not a "how to" book on hunting, it is a classic study of "why" people hunt. This philosophical treatise was written in 1942 in Lisbon, Spain, and has been cited frequently over the years.

It is not an easy read, in that to appreciate what the author is presenting, one must give it some thought. The value to me is this requirement for contemplation.

This hardcover printing, with dust cover, is nicely produced on quality paper complete with etchings and footnotes. The only quibble I have is the font size on the footnotes can be a strain for older eyes...

If you hunt or want to better understand hunting, I highly recommend this book.

Depending on which school of anthropology you subscribe to, "humans" have been on the earth in excess of 5 million years. Through the vast majority of that time, we have been hunter/gatherers. The genes remain; like it or not, we are hunters. Whether you're a serious hunter, a "weekend warrior", buy your meat wrapped in cellophane or an ardent vegetarian, you will enjoy the intelligent, philosophical discussion here.
